Movies with car chases appropriate for kids.

Asked by SuperMouse (30845points) June 19th, 2010

My middle son is currently obsessed with cars and wants to see some movies full of car races and chases. Any good recommendations of these types of films that might be appropriate for a ten year-old?

I was probably that age when I saw Smokey & The Bandit. Not much older, I guess (I’d have to do the math), when I saw Cannonball Run, if that counts.

On further reflection as the memory starts kicking in… Smokey & The Bandit is probably not a good choice unless you manage to get your hands on a TV version.

I was being a scumbum.

Other than that, I don’t know. To me, car chase movies were a thing of the 70s and early 80s, very few I could recommend for kids despite having seen them as a kid.

Um. Cars?

I thought of Gone in 60 Seconds but IMDB doesn’t give it a great rating as a kid’s movie. I just remembered Fast and Furious, I think I’ll check that one out. I am also wondering if I can find Dukes of Hazard on video. @mrentropy I am going to try to find Cannonball Run.

I was going to suggest Speed, but then I remembered it was rated R. It’s been so long since I’ve seen it, so I can’t remember how violent it was. Dukes of Hazard sounds like a good choice.

Speed Racer
I was thinking The Italian Job, but that might be too violent..it’s been a while though. Maybe you could watch it and see what you think.
top 25 car chases classic movies.

Car chases are better than car chases with naked people in them.

I wasn’t too censoring on action withour major gore, but I was censoring about adult sexual content.

It’s a gradual thing, the stages of kids and movies….and, yep…you’ll mess up once in awhile and wish you didn’t let them watch THAT movie! haha

What about some of the James Bond movies? I mean, they’re violent, but there’s no blood and gore, and at least it’s a good character to follow.

@SuperMouse Cannonball run may very well be in the $5 bin at Walmart.

I couldn’t recommend the original Gone In 60 Seconds even though I think it’s better than the remake. I don’t remember enough about the Dukes of Hazzard remake, and that says something right there.

Smokey and the Bandit II may be a bit more low key. Still had Gleason in it, though, so best to check the rating on that one.

Fast and Furious might be all right if you’re into that kind of thing. I only remember the Charger; everything else has been coffee can muffled or neon’ed out of my memory.

The Herbie movies! Does anyone else remember those? Also, not exactly a high speed chase, but Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

mrentropy's avatar

@augustlan I saw all the Love Bug movies not too long ago. Including the new one. Sadly.

@augustlan I was going to suggest Herbie too, I used to enjoy those when I was a kid.

There’s also Grand Theft Auto with Ron Howard, of all people. That was PG in 1977 so it’s probably safe for preemies.

Don’t miss “Dust to Glory” about the Baja 1000. It’s on Netflix streaming.
