A king-sized bed may have a king-sized box spring (bed base), or two smaller box-springs under a king-sized mattress. It is a common misconception that on a North American standard or eastern king, the box springs are identical in size to a twin extra-long, however twin extra-long mattresses next to each other add up to 78 inches (200 cm) wide instead of the 76-inch (190 cm) width that is standard for an eastern king.

The Eastern King is wider than the California King. Most Eastern King bedding is just called King Size, and California King is called Cal King.

King size bed dimensions vary slightly but, most king beds are 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. California king size bed dimensions usually run approximately 72 inches wide and 84 inches long. source
