Question
Have you seen the Fluther Nautical Almanac?
This astonishing list just appeared. See my answer below for link.
It sounds like a Gilbert and Sullivan patter song.

I just saw it while I was polishing up the handle of the big front door. I am mystified. What does it mean, “awarded 2 times,” “awarded 40 times”? Passing strange. I don’t think I want to look at it again. How can awards be anything but divisive?
I think they should add a Rear Admiral award for those of us who break the 5 figure lurve mark by behaving like an ass.
@Jeruba . . .polishing the knob. . .really?
@Jeruba: Collect your sisters and your cousins, if they reckon up to dozens, (and your aunts) to assist.
@Jeruba – I think they’re only awarded as people log onto their pages. The numbers have been increasing…
I think it puts the emphasis in the wrong place and has the potential to hurt us. We were not lacking anything that this provides. And that’s all I am going to permit myself to say.
I just saw this too, then it disapeared. Thought I was losing my mind.
I’m nit sure what to make of it yet.
I actually posted a question about it, but it was bumped as @gailcalled and I must have been composing at the same time.
@all, if you click on your profile and scroll down, you will see the awards. As things stand, I only have a toe in the coral reef. I’m still stuck in the tide pool. =(
I like the awards. Not as a status symbol by any means. But for fun. If it wasn’t about status but other types of awards then I’d be okay with that too. I just like the fun in it. This is my first assessment. I reserve the right to change my mind ;)
I was really confused when I first logged on, but I think it’s really awesome. It’s add extra flavor. Adorable! :)
I unlocked the dubloon award – three times over! I am also the proud owner of a gold ingot! I have no idea how the dollar stacks up to the dubloon or where to display my gold ingot, but I am an incredibly proud jelly nonetheless! As if it was even possible, the Fluther coolness level just increased exponentially in my book!
Modified to Add: Well shiver me timbers, while I was typing I unlocked the Herman Melville award! This just gets more and more bitchin!
Yeah, I saw it when @augustlan first saw it.
Anyone have any idea how you get the Pilgrim award? It doesn’t show how to get it, yet somehow I have it…
Whoa…I keep unlocking awards (Herman Melville a dozen or so times).
If you earn the whole set, will Bendrew FedEx you a real jellyfish?
@mangeons You get the Pilgrim award when you are awarded 362 times.
@cprevite Same here, I keep getting the Herman Melville like, every time I visit a new page!
That Herman one is killing me. It’s taking over my homepage. I have a Hemingway. yay!
I want to know what the heck the pilgrim one is.
Good Lord. I have a lot of Melvilles. And several Hemingways. And a Jules Verne!? When the hell did I give an answer that good?
@Tink1113; It’s not for 362 awards (by the convention set by the other awards, 362 refers to the number of Jellies who have received it), but I think you are onto something with it being an award for getting awards. Or possibly it is for the number of logons made.
Am I the only one who’s completely and totally confused about the meaning of these awards and how they help the site in any way?
I really need to get to sleep so I can wake up early for a busy day tomorrow, but I am too obsessed with these awards now! @tinyfaery I agree with you 100%!
I think this whole award thing is teaching me something: I spend waaay too much time on Fluther. :-) How many “Herman Melville“s can one woman have??
@SuperMouse: Me too, but I can’t look away.
DAMN YOU MELVILLE!!
@Likeradar: I think they’re meant to just be silly fun. Not everything needs to have a porpoise purpose.
So Ben, Andrew and I thought you guys don’t spend enough time on this site anyways, so we did this :P Retroactively awarding all the badges took a while but it’s DONE! You can win award multiple times in case you’re wondering.
@Les click on gailcalled’s link in the very first response, they tell you what all the awards mean.
@Les I have always been of the belief that one can never have enough Melville’s – or Hemingway’s for that matter.
@Tink1113 No, you have to get those two to open them….Andrew won’t tell us what it means :( Something about hints or whatever.
@timtrueman when someone is banned will they be notified that they are being sent to ”Davy Jones’ Locker? That would be kind of cool.
@mangeons, read the latest Fluther blog post and you’ll be up to speed on Mr. Trueman.
@Tink1113 – I know about that link, but it doesn’t say what the “pilgrim” and “old timer” awards mean…
@SuperMouse: ”Davy Jones’ Locker?”
Great idea!! Tim (can I call you “Tim”?) – Madame Mouse is onto something here.
@Tink1113 No. I want them. I just want to know what they are lol
I have to admit, I’m acutally a little proud that I have two Gold Ingots (Asked a question that got 7 Great Questions) since I’ve only asked a total of nine questions in the sixteen months I’ve been here.
@casheroo – Are you talking about the “Pilgrim” and “Old timer”? I got the “Pilgrim” one, and I still don’t know what it means.. :-(
All I have is the Pilgrim one, I don’t know what it means either.
What if we bribe Andrew, Ben, and Tim to tell us?
So, I’ve been reading for the past three hours, and then decide to pop into Fluther before I go to bed. When I refreshed the page, all these awards came up and scared the crap out of me. I thought Fluther was broken. :(
Then I realized that even though many days I feel like my accomplishments amount to nothing more than herding children and pretending to clean the house, I am an award winning Jelly!!!!
Thanks for all the fun, Fluther gods!
@cprevite : Hahaha!
I guess I’ll have to save this thread so I have an explanation of what everything means in the near future when I forget.
After looking at a couple different jellies pages, ive come to the conclusion pilgrimage is for jellies here over a year. Old timer is 2 years.
@johnpowell there is a similar list of stats on our pages. Just hold your mouse over any of the awards and it will say how many times you got each one.
@MissAusten—you think herding children is hard, try herding cats without any tuna in your pocket*
I think the page is very interesting. It lets us have a peek at Fluther stats, which I’ve always been curious about. As far as the awards themselves go, I’m not sure quite what I think yet. Not sure if I care too much. They’re cute, though.
@cprevite Yes, you can…but then your future boss can see what you’ve posted. ;)
I got :
Tide Pool: Guppy PB & Jelly Jelly-Asker Tadpole Jelly-Helper Sardine Jelly-Friend Clownfish Jelly Buddy Deckhand Sailor First-mate Dubloon Herman Melville
Coral Reef: Ernest Hemingway
I checked it from my profile.
What about you?
@augustlan probably not, I got one and I’ve only been here since March.
@YARNLADY Yeah, I was just looking at Zen’s profile, and he has one too. He’s only been here since March, as well.
@augustlan maybe it’s people who came from other sites
@Bendrewin: If someone gets reprimanded or banned, shouldn’t the punishment be keelhauling?
There is a small (very small) percentage of people who actually survive.
For certain death, bring on the Great White Shark.
I think my brain is defective. I got it and I still don’t get what it’s for. Where’s my clue??
Okay to be fair I’m still sorting my “activity for you” so maybe I’ll come across it….
Hmm, tested out the theory for myself, and nothing happened. Maybe you had to have posted a while ago?
Okay my question is this: for those of who say aren’t functioning at 100%, say someone like me who will gladly use the excuse of having another human being living inside me and sucking my brain juice, will there ever be a revealing of what it means?
Click on my first link, under first answer. That tells you the definition of all those nautical terms. Then click on your username and you will see under what catergories you have quallified.
so i thought ok, for those followin the salt and pepper question (pepper spicy) and well it was the first question. Thing is, im not followin that question lol
@gailcalled not for pilgram
@UberbatmanI apparently qualify so it appears under my profile. I wouldn’t spend much time or energy on this unless you have eight feet of snow outside.
There are no definitions as yet for Atlantis and PIlgrim. Probably will be a coming attraction.
@uberbatman
THANK YOU!!!!! At least now I know what others are thinking.
So what would be the other one, not the pilgrim but the.. old-timer? Is that just being here since it began?
@RedPowerLady old timer is joined the site prior to june 29th 07 when fluther relaunched.
Shilolo figured this out last night in chat.
@augustlan appears to be so. I just logged out and logged in on my girlfriends name and visited the thread(she didnt have the award) but she still doesnt have it, maybe it just takes some time.
@uberbatman Thank you. You are so kind for making things clear for me.
@uberbatman It either takes time or you had to visit before last night and the announcement of the awards? This is what I’m thinking.
I visited that thread once or twice before, I know I have. It’s been a while though. I don’t have Pilgrim at all.
Will someone please solve the mystery for me! @uberbatman what did your girlfriend get?
@SuperMouse a little bit of me ;)
nahhh, the pilgram award for visiting the salt & pepper question
@uberbatman Crap I’m July 1st…
What? I’m July 1st? That can’t be…
@Vincentt they it’s one letter from each person’s name:
Acertdghyrtnx Fadbuttz.
and we’ll all know who they’re talking about.
@Saturated_Brain me too. by the way, thanks for your email address in that image. <alerts spambots>
@eponymoushipster GA. Spam me if you want then you vile thing.
@Saturated_Brain oh, not me. but if you get an offer for breast enlargement…it was totally Zen.
