How much gold does the U.S. government hold today at Fort Knox?

Asked by palerider (1020points) October 13th, 2010

There used to be television shows documenting the gold stored there, but that has been over thirty years ago. Does it bother anyone that the U.S. dollar is not backed by gold?

At present, there isn’t enough gold, possibly in the world, for us to go back on the gold standard. All the same, I feel a bit uneasy when I think about how my money is good only because a bank someplace says that it is.

the actual gold reserves at the bullion depository. According to the information from the US department of the treasury about the U.S. mint, the present holdings of gold at Fort Knox are 147.3 million ounces.
