What is causing this big Dubstep movement in the USA?

Asked by risingonashes (282points) October 14th, 2010

I have been listening to dubstep for a while and I have noticed that everywhere I turn lately there is a huge show where I am from.
Has anyone else noticed this trend anywhere else?

There’s a lot of kids doing a lot of drugs.

HAHA, yeah I suppose that could be the case, however here most are 21+ and everyone drinks. I was just shocked to see it coming back.

I’ve noticed it here, too.
Our local shows went from metal and punk to this dubstep nonsense.
I’m not against it, but I do miss how shows used to be around here.

I remember when this happened in rap music. One minute, it was only known by a small community. Five or six years down the road, it gets embraced by the mainstream.

Same as it ever was, as the old song goes.

@rangerr – I’m not a raving fan of it, but stuff like Bassnectar is worth checking out.

@Hobbes yes, agreed Bassnectar is pretty awesome.

I’m so lame. I like that Skream guy. And I like Shackleton’s Naked because it’s closer to the drum n’ bass I used to listen to in the 90s – that’s a great bass drop at 1:52.

@aprilsimnel no worries! I love Skream, he is one of the pioneers of UK dubstep.

I’m a huge dubstep nerd, but most of the dubstep coming out of the US is shit. Most of the new dubstep nowadays is shit.

Most of the new stuff nowadays is about 6 minutes of the most intense, crappy, bland wobble bass you can get.

I’d take the old and experimental stuff any day over the Excision/DatsiK/Flux Pavillion crap.

Any clown can make a modern dubstep, song, too. I myself made one in about an hour using a bunch of cheeseball wobble bass sounds and the generic 80bpm simple drum beat. It’s just so easy to make dubstep any clown with a computer and a midi keyboard can do it and get huge.

To really answer your question, it’s a fun, different, and easily acceptable form of electronic music that’s different and “weird”. The underlying drug references seems to make it fairly popular among irritating teenagers as well.

I love Dubstep! A friend introduced me to it!!! We’re both pot heads so I would agree with the first reply. Kids doing drugs!
