If someone converts to Islam and wishes to marry, do they need a certificate proving they are Muslim in order to do so?

A certificate issued by whom and in what office?

Would I therefore need a certificate proving that I am Shinto/Buddhist in order to marry my Japanese wife?

Basically, are you talking about a religious marriage or a civil one? If it’s a religious marriage, I suspect that all you need is for the person in the position to carry out the ceremony to recognise the participants as Muslims.

I was talking about a religious marriage. When I took my shahadah, I was given a certificate and told it was required for things like marriage and Hajj. Some places say it’s not needed so, I’m confused and hoping for clarification when it comes to a person I know who doesn’t want to take his shahadah in a mosque and therefore won’t receive a certificate.

Wouldn’t it then be up to the individual mosque preforming the wedding ceremony to decide if they need it or not?

If that were true how would Lisa Halaby have married King Hussein of Jordan?

Aren’t women exempt from this? A Christian woman is allowed to marry a Muslim man; but a Muslim woman is forbidden to marry a Christian man, unless he converts.
