What operating system do you have?
Do you have a desktop, or a laptop?

Are your speakers/headphones definitely plugged in? And plugged in to the right socket? Generally the speaker hole is color-coded green, but not always.
If you’re on a Windows machine, go to your Control Panel, and to Sounds. On that first tab (the Playback tab) does it show anything as being plugged in?

I had 6-channel sound integrated into my mother board, and it died on me. The easy, checp fix is to pick up a USB Headset. You can get one with a built-in microphone if you want to use it for Skype or Gmail phone. I got a Logitech USB H360 and I’m pleased as punch with it. It was about $40. No software to install. Just plug it into a USB port an you’ve got sound. I actually like that it doesn’t play through the system speakers. That way when I am surfing late at night and land on some site with an embedded video, it doesn’t blast out and wake up the whole household. I used to listen to music during the day and sometimes forget to turn the volume back down.

This could be a huge range of issues (I’m assuming you have Windows because you mentioned your volume icon is on the right side of the screen):

1) Ensure your speakers/headphones are plugged in. My old desktop computer didn’t have a built-in speaker; if I would forget to plug in my headphones, it would tell me I had no audio device.

2) Restart your computer. With Windows, sometimes a simple restart can work wonders for mysterious problems.

3) Reinstall/update the driver for your sound card. Go to the Device Manager, find your sound card, and Google for the driver. BE CAREFUL: only download drivers from the manufacturer’s web site.

4) Did you make any changes to your computer recently, such as installing programs or cleaning the registry? Try using Windows’ System Restore to bring your computer back to its previous state.

5) If all else fails, it might be a hardware issue.
