Have you ever owned a bowflex?

Asked by wgallios (1768points) November 9th, 2010

Have you ever had a Bowflex (any model), and if so what are your opinions on it? I am considering getting one, and all the reviews I have read (from various sources) say it is a good piece of equipment for someone who just wants to stay in shape.

I’ve never been a gym person, and I have never bought exercise equipment for my house before. A Bowflex seems like a lot of bang for your buck. What are your thoughts/experiences with it?

I haven’t owned a Bowflex. However, I did own a Soloflex, which is the precursor to the Bowflex.

The frame was well designed. However, the weak link in the Soloflex design was the resistance bands. I believe the Bowflex is the answer to that shortcoming. However, I suspect that you have to be concerned about clearance issues with the bowflex to ensure that you have enough room for the flex arms to have enough space for the full range of motion.

It does offer a lot of variety for the space but you do need a lot of room for the arms to move.
It gets to be a hassle changing the bench and resistance positions I used mine for about a year before deciding that dumbells and running are easier. Now it’s a semi-convenient storage shelf.
You really need to be careful that you are doing exercises correctly (like any home equipment) or you can hurt yourself.

I have not owned a Bowflex but I did purchase a nice Eliptical a few years ago.

Of course it went the way of most in home exercise equipment.

After a few months of workouts it then became a glorified clothers hanger at the foot of my bed. lol

Sold it to my daughter and her room mates and they have been using it a lot this year.

Like anything the novelty will wear off and then it depends on whether you choose to keep it around or unload it.

In my case after I had only used it for about 30 mintutes out of the year I chose to let it go to a new home.

I prefer walking and outdoor exercise anyway so my original intention was to use it for winter workouts when the weather was too bad for being outside. Meh…I found it boring. lol

Yes and I don’t think it’s worth it. There is too much plastic and it’s not well built in my honest opinion. You just can’t compete with a gym membership. The “Power rods” have to wear out after a while and you can’t add more weight after you reached the maximum capacity of the rods. I never used it long enough to wear them out. They other parts broke on me before that. Too many thing that are cheaply made in my opinion. I heard great things about them but I am not pleased with it. Too expensive for what you actually get.

Not worth the money. As mentioned, cheaply made (for the cost). I’d rather spend $300 on some dumbbells and a bench. You can do anything you can do with the bowflex with dumbbells.

And it’s sure is a sore for sight eyes.

I always had a cheap set of free weights and a bench. Operative word here is cheap. most of us are all jazzed up when we decide to begin working out but that tends to wither on the vine after a while and then you will be stuck with an expensive piece of equipment that eats up a lot of room in the house. They are hard to get rid of without taking a beating on the sale. Just look at craigslist to see all those bowflexes folks are trying to unload. Don’t buy new if you do get one.
