Can you help me identify this lost dog?

Asked by Tink (8673points) December 6th, 2010 from iPhone

I found him outside a few hours ago. I opened the gate and let him inside because it has been raining since yesterday and he is wet. His paws are still-like, I figure they must be freezing but he also limps a little. He looks like a big dog, it must be because of all that fur he has. His tail also looks naturally little. And I can see a collar but it’s buried beneath all it’s fur. I’ve been searching the interwebs myself to try to find his breed but I don’t know where to start from.

Awww poor guy. Are you just trying to find his breed, or his home?

Tink's avatar

@Likeradar Both. Although I wouldn’t mind keeping him if his owners don’t show up.

Grab a comb and check out that collar!

Aww, poor guy. He looks like he has been on the run for a while.

Could be a Maltese mix or a Bichon mix with some poodle possibly- hard to tell with all those mats!

You did not show a shot of his tail or tell us his size. Perhaps you might post a picture of him standing next to a familiar object, such as a toilet, so we could have some perspective. He could be a “Hungarian Puli”: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.22dog.com/images2/Hungarian-Puli.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.22dog.com/breeds/Hungarian-Puli.html&usg=__7QDaZBLRmEjTxTqrfkATZ23GMMs=&h=358&w=420&sz=37&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=6Y_SAKkP4ZJyEM:&tbnh=147&tbnw=170&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhungarian%2Bpuli%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DX%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26biw%3D1503%26bih%3D633%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=339&vpy=335&dur=2866&hovh=207&hovw=243&tx=130&ty=139&ei=GSv9TIjxB8P38Aa-keDkCg&oei=GSv9TIjxB8P38Aa-keDkCg&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:15,s:0 (notice his nose is the right color. With a Puli, the coat can be any number of solid colors. Pulis also have long stiff guard hairs that the softer under coat tends to wrap around, when the dog is properly groomed. It looks like he has guard hairs, and he definitely has the matting thing going on, just like Pulis tend to do. Pulis also have long tapering tails. You can’t see them in the picture, but they tend to curl a bit. He could also be a “Kommodor”: http//declubz.com/blog/2008/07/26/komondor-dog/ but get the sense that this dog is smaller than a Kommodor.

Of course, he could also be a poodle, or a mutt. ;)

without knowing where you live, it would be hard to help you find his people unless the info is on his collar and you can get to it. I’d call local vets. He may even be ear tagged. Post him on your local area craigslist. I did this when my cat went missing. call all the animal shelters and give them the craigslist link so they can print out his pix and info.

I was thinking that he looks like an un-groomed Goldendoodle. I went to go examine him and I was wrong on the tail bit, sadly it does look like its been cropped.
@snowberry His coat isn’t that dread lock-like. lol
@anartist I will look at his collar when I groom him a little in a while, hopefully I can find out where he lives if he has a tag.

@snowberry : The ears are not set right for a Puli, but a labradoodle or some kind of “oodle” looks likely…

A friend of mine has a dog that looks very much like that and it’s a Shitzu mix (she doesn’t know what the mixed part is). I hope you can get some information off the collar!

Interestingly enough, her dog constantly digs out under the fence and runs around her neighborhood. Luckily her neighbors keep an eye out for her.

Looks like a poodle mix of some kind.

I’m glad you’re taking care of him Although my first thought was he escaped from the Land of Misfit Toys. He was their pet.

Take him in to a vet for a scan to see if he has an ID chip implanted. Many pet owners are chipping their pets to make identification possible if they somehow lose thier collars or tags.

@WestRiverrat : Good idea! Also, some dogs are tattooed as well.

I think he’s a poodle mix of some kind. I hope you can find his owners, or find a loving home for him.

Check the collar, take him to the vet to see if he’s microchipped, post flyers, post on craigslist.
