General Question

I have relatives in Sweden who say the country is in turmoil with immigration, crime and approaching chaos. Anyone know what is going on?

Asked by Talkonthestreetis (7points) January 27th, 2011

Internet details range from “All is well” to “Civil war” in the making. Has anyone been to Malmo? Should I fly out there?

MInd you, I can neither read nor speak and understand Swedish so I have to go with English languages sources and I have looked all over the place including this sources, which seem to come directly out of Sweden and I just don’t see that there is any reason to believe that things are at all amiss in Sweden, any more or less than usual, let alone that things are bordering on out of control. I simply don’t see it.

I have looked around the internet and also have looked at these sites:

The Local/se

And

RadioSweden

which seem to be sources that come directly from Sweden and I see nothing.

What exactly are you talking about?

My son is an immigrant to Sweden and he says that the number of people on disability is nearly outstripping the ability of the country to handle. He is on permanent disability due to a severe stroke three years ago, and getting the necessary treatments is getting harder and harder as they try to weed out the fraud.

As far as other crimes, there is a huge increase of organized racketeering.

Sweden having been a homogenous country, they have not adapted well to North African and Middle Eastern immigrants. It is an issue throughout Europe, and has had a strong backlash in many places. Sweden has had stronger reactions than others, but we don’t hear much about Sweden in the U.S.

@zenvelo Yes, but the OP is using words and phrases like “turmoil,” “approaching chaos” and ”“Civil war” in the making” and is asking “Should I fly out there?” I don’t see anything going on right now or in the near future that would indicate any sort of imminent collapse of or armed conflagration in Sweden that would necessitate someone worrying that maybe they should make a trip there to make sure everyone’s o.k., that would necessitate the OP’s seeming level of alarm and concern. The language used by the OP just seems more than little alarmist and reactionary. Am I wrong?

@lillycoyote you’re right. It’s really not that different from some of the alarmists in this country, fear mongering by nationalists that the whole country is falling apart.

@Talkonthestreetis Muslims have been rioting in the streets in Malmo. If you are Jewish, you may want to be especially careful in the area. Anti-Semitic hate crimes are really bad throughout Sweden, but Malmo has seen recent rioting and is dangerous. It isn’t alarmist. Look up some Swedish newspapers online and read about it yourself.

@bkcunningham O.K. I searched on “Malmo riots” and I am seeing that now. It’s now on my radar. I will try to learn more about what is going on there.

Sweden ? Civil war ? Nah, it is not any worse there than any other place with a decent size city from what I can gather… In any nations there are a time and place when disgruntled people demonstrate harsh, but it will soon blow over :)
A civil war is extremely unlikely, especially if IKEA makes the weapon instructions :p

lillycoyote's avatar

@Staalesen LOL! I realize there are some serious issues here, but the idea of Sweden engaging in a civil war, where the logistics, weapons, and other equipment needed by any standing army has been outsourced to IKEA has just, plain and simple, got me rolling on the floor, laughing my ass off.

mattbrowne's avatar

Nonsense. There’s no civil war. No chaos. There was a islamist suicide bombing recently.

Staalesen's avatar

a failed suicide bombing… only guy the poor bastard blew up was himself.

Exactly. I wonder who invents rumors about chaos in Sweden. What complete nonsense. If someone is looking for chaos, take a look at what’s going on in Cairo.
