Futon purchasing advice/suggestions, please...

Asked by BarnacleBill (16123points) February 6th, 2011

After shuffling rooms around in the house, I now have a small office (9×12) that at the moment only has a desk in it. I would like to add something that converts into sleeping space, as I periodically end up with a houseful of overnight guests, and lack enough beds. I decided that a futon be my best bet.

Problem is, I went shopping this afternoon and none of the furniture store I went to still sell futons. I believe I am going to have to do this online. In looking at the various sites, it appears I am going to have to purchase the frame, mattress and cover separately. Is this correct?

I am looking for a wood frame, either in a dark mission or arts and crafts style, and some sort of contemporary pattern that would go with mustard colored walls with white woodwork, and black/white photos and and a few screen printed posters. Any suggestions as to where I should look? What are the considerations for buying a futon mattress?

Happy hunting. Looks like you may have to purchase the mattress after, they never said it was going to be easy or cheap…although I hope you can find a break.

Oh, thanks, @Meego! I didn’t think of Walmart; there’s not one that close to me, and I don’t shop very much. The walnut frame neo-Mission looks like it should work well!

You can also find a selection of whole futons at Overstock.com.

I would strongly suggest that you spend a little more on a futon. Trust me; it’s worth it. I bought this one from Walmart (I think it’s the one you’re looking at) in July when I moved. It looks great, but only the arms are wooden – the rest of the frame is made of rather flimsy metal. It’s already starting to sag on one side as the metal is bending. It is pretty comfy to sleep on, though, but the mattress is not very thick at all and now that the metal is bending it makes terrible noises if you roll over in the night. We do use it as a couch, so we sit on it every day; if you’re only planning to use it occasionally I’m sure it’d last longer.

But really, I’m cursing myself every day that I couldn’t afford a better one. Spend a little more if you can, and get something better.

Ok so I was looking around and I found a site that might be more beneficial which shows the stores the futons and the prices! Check it out…

@Seelix, @Meego, thanks for your help. In looking at the Walmart one compared to the Simmons futon frames on the site Meego linked to, I can see what you mean by the frame being flimsy metal. Some of the ones on Meego’s search page have pretty substantial wooden frames. The ones that come with the mattress for around $500ish sound pretty reasonable. I can always purchase a cover separately.

@BarnacleBill – I bought a cover from overstock.com; again, I didn’t spend much on it and probably should have. The one I got was only $20, though, so I’m sure if you spent around $50 you’d get a good one. I’ve been using a fitted sheet as a cover, actually – it fits nicely and looks nice, and it’s super easy to take off and throw it in the wash!

I ended up ordering from www.futoncreations.com, which was a link off of one of the pages on @Meego‘s search page. It was a full package, all wood frame, mattress and cover with free shipping. I upgraded the mattress to a 10”. This one with the Blackberry cover, which is squares and dots.

I really appreciate your input, Seelix, about the frame.

@BarnacleBill – Looks like a good one! I’m glad you asked this question; I’d hate for you and your overnight guests to have to deal with the crap futon I have :)

If the site’s to be believed, I should have it by the weekend. Will report back on what it’s really like.

@BarnacleBill I hope the entire purchase goes as planned! I am glad I could be of help. I search decorating ideas mostly on my pc for my profession & I swear instead of the top searches my pc just pleases me, cause I can look up anything in the search criteria and searches always come back related to my job…interior decorating…which is good for job vibes but “Hey PC I would like to look at other things as well!”. LOL. Yes I do talk to the pc regularly as I swear it’s controlled by my dead husband…it even turns on and off at will as well as the printer wtf!! lol I think my husband is just trying to tell me to move along and work harder. He was always my biggest fan of all my artsy ways and actually was the one who was my confidence builder while helping me into our own business which is relying fully on me now.

For anyone following this, the experience with the company was great. Communicaiton from the company was just enough to let me know where my order was, I was given the information I needed to track the shipping, delivery was fast and courteous. Some assembly was needed on the futon frame. All the pieces were there and easy to find in the packaging. All wooden parts were individually wrapped to prevent scratching. The directions were easy to follow, and included how to unfold and fold the futon, with friendly helpful reminders. There are a few small spots on the frame were the finish is a little rough, but not enough to complain about. The futon cover is nicely sewn.

Excellent experience!
