How can I arrange my art studio to allow creative flow?

Asked by Dog (25152points) February 23rd, 2011

Right now furniture is all pressed against walls except my easel table which is in front of the large windows (south facing) there are two very small windows to the west and the storage/entry to the north. East is a flat blank wall.

Furniture:
Computer desk
Chemical cabinet- large end table
Table
Easel table
Long dresser that has Rose and Agatha on top. (my studio companion rabbits)

Any pointers would be awesome- Feng Shui tips too.

Easel in the south east corner facing the window and the dresser with the rabbits in the south west corner. Everybody needs light this time of year. Computer desk in slightly or on the east wall facing into the room next to the easel. Your two most used places? Chemical cabinet in the north east corner. The table on the west wall.

I wish I knew! The room I paint in is tiny! It has an east facing window. The area where I throw clay is downright scary!
I probably would put things against the wall as I like a clear walkway. My requirements would be good light, organised supplies and even better music.I’ll be following this thread for sure!I wish I could help you more

What do you do for inspiration @lucillelucillelucille ?

@Adirondackwannabe awesome! Is your plan based in any philosophy or your creative vibe?

@Dog Combination of both. I’m a nature freak, so that window’s going to draw me right in. Plus the rabbits were I can see them easily and they get some light too. If I want to cut back on the sensory input turn the easel to face the blank wall, but I still get the sun on my back. Plus I like to view most of the room from where I’m working. Chemicals could be messy or have some risks, so put them in the safest corner. The computer faces the other window and lets me view the room as well. Curtains on the window if it gets too warm.

@Dog -I get outside and walk in the woods. Most of my work is inspired by nature and sometimes all it takes is a walk to do it.A field trip to an art museum always gets me going too as does a conversation with friends that are artists.
Try getting outside and don’t put pressure on yourself. If you are stressed,I will send you my mother-in-law to take it out on! XD

If the room is big enough, you could use the desk or table to divide up the space into different sections. You could even have them both sticking out from one wall, maybe with the table up against the back of the desk. The table side of the room would be the artsy section, and computer-desk side could be the sitting-at-a-desk-and-working section.

Put bottles of vodka in unexpected places. To surprise yourself, do this when you are really drunk.

If you have the money and room to put a mini fridge in there, that would be good too. Sometimes inspiration hits and you want to run with it, but if you need a quick snack or a glass of milk or some iced tea, it’s better to have it right there rather than have to stop what you are doing and go into the house. Get a portable CD player with some decent speakers too.

Make sure that you have a cabinet/tabletop piece of furniture that is right next to your easel to set stuff on (like your glass of iced tea, your phone, your glasses) so that you don’t have to keep getting up to go get those things. Keep stuff in the drawers that you use often, but don’t necessarily need or want to keep on top of this piece of furniture. Just make sure that the things that you use often and need are right there next to you.
