How does the colour of someone's skin alter decisions...

Asked by gmander (1141points) April 23rd, 2011

…about getting a tattoo? Obviously people have been body painting and tattooing since pre-history. Is it just that safe and bright colours for tattooing are a recent invention? Do they come out the same on all skin colours?

I don’t have any tattoos, so I don’t know how valuable my opinion is, but I would assume that the darker the skin tone is the harder it will be for brighter colors to show. I do know that overtime colorful tattoos can fade, and I think that happens will all skin tones.

Yes, as @beckk mentioned, the darker a person’s skin, the darker the tattoo will look. With darker skin it’s nearly impossible to get colors to show up as bright. Most people with darker skin elect to get black tattoos because of this. All tattoos fad slowly over time.

Some older tattooing methods involved cutting the skin and rubbing ash inside the wound. Modern tattooing became popular around the early 1900’s when Samuel O’Reilly modified Thomas Edison’s electric pen with the tube and needle system that’s used today.

African tribal scarification patterns has been a traditional way to ornament black skin. However, it is much harder to remove than a tattoo and probably not everyone’s cup of tea.

Experiments with bleaching chemicals used in a tattoo gun might yield interesting results,
