How do I fix the wireless on my laptop?

Asked by marialisa (464points) May 11th, 2011

My wireless used to work on my laptop until I got a new hard drive. Now my wireless connects but is insanely slow. I bought a wireless stick and that worked but is a hassle. How can I fix this?

New hard drive… complete with the proper drivers for your wifi adapter? I know that generic drivers often lack features that the proper driver has. Things like 802.11n or 802.11g support. If you have a generic driver that only supports 802.11b then you can kiss your bandwidth goodbye.

How do I find out which hard drive was installed?

My network adapter says Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN

Laptops usually only have one hard drive. Now, the driver is a file that tells Windows how to use a piece of hardware, in this case, your Broadcom wifi adapter. When you replaced the hard drive, it’s possible that the correct driver file was not copied over or configured properly. It is almost certain that the settings weren’t. (Settings like the name of your network and any associated passwords.) Windows knows it’s there but not what to do with it.

I would go to the Broadcom site and get the correct drivers first, and then make sure they are set up right. More thoughts after I get out of work.
