Would you consider snail racing to be animal cruelty?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21675points) May 14th, 2011

Obviously it is not on a par with cock fighting or stabbing a bull to death. But would you consider it cruelty?

The snail is placed on a board, while people surround the board and shout and make loud noises.

EDIT: The snails would also have non toxic stickers with numbers on them, softly and temporarially stuck to their shell.

It would certainly be considered cruel when I succumbed to a heart attack from all the excitement.

Probably not, unless they are later served as an appetizer.

No more than mosquito or housefly races would be cruel. Snails are pests. I don’t see this sport overtaking NASCAR in popularity.

No. Not unless you’re somehow prodding the snail with an electric charge to make sure he keeps moving.

Bonus question: What is the probability that a super radical animal rights activist would get pissed off at the idea of a snail race?

Shaking the Magic 8 Ball: response says, “Very Probable.”

No. Not if the snails were fed and cared for in the interim.

poisonedantidote's avatar

@marinelife They would be, they would have a special house built for them, there would be over 100 of them, and only 8 of them would be raced 1ce a week.

@poisonedantidote: And would they then be adopted by loving families and given a happy life in the country?

poisonedantidote's avatar

@gailcalled actually they would probably be picked off by birds 1 by 1, and get replaced over time.

dont tell

Blueroses's avatar

@gailcalled Well, that’s what we’d tell the children while we wipe the garlic butter off our chins

I know the question is ridiculous, at least thats how it appears to me… but, you never know what that 1 nut will do.

It’s more than likely the highlight of a snail’s life.
I wonder, do the crowd shout out “Wow, look at that escar- go!!” (poetic licence in missing the “t” from the end of the spelling.)

mazingerz88's avatar

No. The snails don’t even know they are racing. They just think they have to get away from all the crazy people that’s why they run straight forward. :-)

crisw's avatar

I don’t think I would consider it cruelty, and I am very sensitive to such things. Snails cannot hear, so the noise isn’t much of an issue.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

I don’t consider it cruelty but it’s stupid to use snails for human’s entertainment.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Not unless they were being ridden hard by angry ants who whipped them and kicked them with spurs.

No. Then again when my kids were in pre-school they did Snail Art. This is accomplished by bringing in lots of snails, dipping them in different colors of paint, and putting them on a piece of paper to move around. The works of art created were truly masterpieces.

We salt their tiny tails to give them some incentive.
