What percentage should you tip the guy who details your car?

Asked by JilltheTooth (19787points) June 2nd, 2011

My friend just asked me this and I have no idea. My idea of detailing is to throw out the garbage, and hope the rain washes off the gunk… So, Jellies, help my friend out here, please…

Tip the guy? I don’t understand. Doesn’t he already charge you for his services?

Like I said, I have no idea, but she seems to think so.

How much is she paying for the detailing?

I don’t know, but I know she had a coupon, but wanted to tip based on what it would have normally cost.
Damn, @breedmitch , it was supposed to be a surprise! ;-)

The reason I ask is because of the difference in prices I’ve found around the country. Here in Florida, I can get my Tahoe detailed for $45 dollars. Outside of Washington, DC; it cost about $159. I actually tip more here in Florida. They do a much better job detailing here in Florida too. I’d say no less than 15 percent.

Thanks, @bkcunningham , I’ll pass that on.

Our detailers have a “tip jar” in which we put 10% of the charge. A full car detail, including engine steam clean and all carpets and surfaces inside and out is around $100.

Here there is only one place within 50 miles, and for inside and out, it costs $140. Tip also?

Only tip on the level of service you recieve. Make your own judgement.
