Can deleted messages be recovered?

Asked by wundayatta (58722points) June 22nd, 2011

It seems that if you send a message to someone, they can delete it. On the other hand, we cannot delete messages we have sent. I would love to know the logic behind this.

But I also want to know if I can recover messages I wrote but that the person I wrote them to deleted.

If you can’t delete messages that you’ve sent, then why would you ever need to recover something you sent, and which someone else deleted? The message you want is in your “sent” queue.

Or am I misunderstanding the question?

I don’t think so….not by me,anyway.;)
I mean what I say, so I don’t worry too much about it.

No, once it is gone from the other person’s PM page, it is gone for good.

@WasCy I can’t delete messages I send, but the recipient can. So if I ever want to recover the message so I can see what I said (my memory sucks, and I probably write hundreds of messages per year), I need to reread the message. If my correspondent deletes the message, and I can’t get it back, I’m screwed as far as a record of the past is concerned (thanks @marinelife).

I wish I understood the logic of this. Why do I not have control over my own messages?

If it is part of a conversation here in pms and you go into the conversation, are you sure you cannot see it? I think I have seen what were purported to have been deleted messages that way.

@janbb Absolutely sure. All my messages from the beginning of the conversation are gone. The only ones left are one sentence pms that say nothing.

Frustrating but I guess nothing to do about it.

Since I can see them, you could ask me to retrieve it for you. I’d be happy to find it and copy/paste the body of it to you in a PM or email, if you like.
