How do you treat bleached hair? It's not soft anymore!

Asked by Kokoro (1424points) June 27th, 2011

I bought almost $60 worth of suggested bleached hair products to hydrate and condition it, but I am not sure if it’s working. My hair does feel softer but not as soft as I’d like it to be. Many people say avoid heat like the plague, but I have to blow dry my hair because I gel it up when I go to work. I hear it’s bad to wash it everyday, but again, I have to.

Any beauty gurus out here? Help me out! I’m missing my natural silky smooth locks. I fear I may be losing hair as well.

Bleaching dries your hair out as you know. I had a very bad burnt perm in the 80’s that absolutely fried my hair. My hair dresser recommended Mane and Tail conditioner. It was originally made for horses tail and manes, but did wonders for my burnt hair. I highly recommend this product. I have seen it in drug stores. Manentail

Thanks @chyna. Did you use this conditioner everyday? I have heard it’s not good to use it daily… but who knows.

Oh yes, but my hair was fried. It really helped my hair without me having to cut it really short.

@Kokoro I know a solution. But it ain’t cheap at all.

@chyna Thanks again! @KatetheGreat What is it?

@Kokoro Get a keratin treatment. It makes it very soft and renews your hair. Even straightens it out for a while. But it can cost upwards $300.

Either that or look for products with Keratin in it.

Mayonaise and avocado mixed also works when you put it in your hair. I do that.

Did you color it yourself or go to a salon? A few years ago a colorist (he was not my colorist nor was he from my salon so he had nothing to gain or lose in telling me this) told me that hair dye for home use (in other words, non-professional, i.e. Loreal or Revlon or whatever) has more amonia in it, because when people dye their hair at home they want to see a big difference.

I can tell you at my colorist, in an expensive salon, they use a hair color that’s silk based, so my hair does not feel hard or straw-like in any way. Also, by getting it done at a salon, every other visit I get a hair cut, so the ends are constantly trimmed off. I think when people color it at home they may not get it cut as often, and that makes the ends look even deader and more burnt.

Every day I use a little conditioner after the shampoo, they’re both professional products (which i find to be thicker and less watery than the supermarket stuff).

Buy a deep conditioner, or a hot oil treatment.

Definitely use conditioner every day. If I don’t use conditioner I can’t comb through my hair. i have used it every day almost my entire life.

If you can’t avoid washing your hair daily, it can be helpful to make sure you leave the conditioner on for about five minutes for it to soak in to your hair. I wash my hair as soon as I get in the shower, put Olay conditioner on in and then clip it up, then shave and wash and scrub. The hot air helps the conditioner soak into your hair, and at the end it feels so silky.

Thanks everyone. I had it done at a salon then used a home one after it, so it was dyed twice. Mistake!

I’ve used V05 hot oil on my bleached hair and had good results.
