Are there any crimes you would help your kid(s) cover up or get away with?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) July 9th, 2011

Around my neck of the woods they have a saying ”the blood is thicker than the mud” which basically say you go all out for family over others, even if the family member is wrong. In conversations on the topic often it is mentioned how David Kaczynski turned in his brother Ted as being the Unabomber. That even if Ted suspected his brother, he should have put family first and kept silent. If your kid rushed in panting for breath and covered in blood saying he/she was out with friends, for instance, and someone started to harass or bother one of his/her friends and they rat packed him and while he was being held and pummeled, someone produced a knife and stabbed the beaten guy in the neck. Would you go so far as to help hide or dispose of the bloody clothes, get them cleaned up and/or provide them an alibi for the night? Would you help a family member avoid arrest, or would it be determined by the severity of the crime; say vandalism vs. car theft, etc? Where does the blood stop with you?

nope. That would enable them and I would prefer to have them learn from their mistakes.

I would gladly hide their weed for them.

I am very loyal to my children, and as a Dad I believe “blood is thicker than mud”. I know many would criticize me for not “teaching my kids” about what is right and wrong, but to me familial loyalty, blood loyalty, is number one. I know that may sound illogical to many do-gooders out there, but I’m a loving father, and a loving father doesn’t have to be logical. Who determines what is right and wrong cannot tell a Dad who is trying to help his children, his own flesh and blood, whom he loves so dearly and would give his own life for, that what I’m doing is bad and unlawful.

Part of being a good parent is teaching your children to face the consequences of their actions. Thus if I was aware that my child had participated in a violent or destructive crime, I would accompany them to a police station.

David Kaczynski can sleep at night knowing no one else will be injured by his brother’s mental illness.

By the way, it is a crime to aid a criminal in evading punishment.

I would help the kids dig the hole to bury the meatloaf that was cooked for dinner and swear on a blood oath to not say a word!

If it was a small crime, I would most definitely make them face the consequences. Hopefully if they think their mum is such a bitch as to shop them for the little stuff, they wouldn’t be game to do anything worse.

If it was a serious thing, I would be mortified but I don’t think I could cover up for them if they had done something really bad. It would kill me to make them do the right thing, but I am not sure I could live with not doing the right thing either.

@Cruiser Bring that meat loaf down here I like meatloaf.

All yours @woodcutter!! ;)

Only the ones I’d commit myself. Of course I don’t have kids, so I guess I’ll have to break the law by myself.

It would depend on where I live and whether I would think the legal system would be one that I would entrust anyone in.

Where I live now, I would likely help them flee the country.

Toilet papering.
My son actually went through this crazy year long court process for TP’ing a house.

Well if Justin Bieber was ever to visit our neck of the woods, say for a book signing for example & the pen just happened to slip from my daughters hand planting itself firmly into his eye socket…..i’m going to claim it was an accident yeah.

marinelife's avatar

No. It would not really be helping them in terms of their growth as people.

Meego's avatar

Nope I don’t condone anybody’s actions in my family they are on their own. If they want to break the law do it w/out me.

@ucme I live not that far from the biebs. He’s a nice kid that came from a beautiful small town that seems to excel in musical/drama/entertaining which even has the Stratford Shakespeare Festival
BTW the town has this auto place with amazing deals..I bought my car from there.
Why do ppl hate on the Bieber?

Only Murder. I draw the line there. HAW!

I would be more inclined to bend (break) some laws on my daughter’s behalf. My wife (the law school graduate) – not so much.

If I had children, I would certainly help them hide a crime if I thought not doing so would ruin their lives. Learning from one’s actions has it’s place, but only when that place does not involve jail time or physical danger. I expect that if I ever did anything that I might get in trouble for, my mother would help me in any way she could.
Of coarse, this is assuming that my children do not have a history of doing illegal things. Helping a person when they have made a one time mistake is one thing, enabling them to repeatedly make bad decisions is another.

If a crime has a victim, they’re going to get the punishment for it. End of Story. Blood is not above some laws. That being said, some laws are ridiculous and I would help them cover up certain ‘crimes’ yes like marijuana possession and the like.

@Meego that’ll be because people have varied tastes/opinions, oh & because he’s a twat.

ucme's avatar

Who said it was anything to do with his sound? Anyway, we move on…...

My daughter hit a mail truck. I put the car in the garage, swept up the glass, and paid off the mail man before the cops arrived. Am I a bad person?

Well… I would help my children if they were kissing a girl, for instance.

Or if they had been drinking a glass of wine.

Or if they said something nasty about the mighty man in the sky. I’d help them flee the country and evaid justice without even a second thought. And tell them they were stupid to do that.

YARNLADY's avatar

@whitenoise Good Point. It’s all a matter of perspective. The news tell us there are parents who would lead the crowd in stoning their daughter to death if she is caught kissing a boy.
