How to play the blues? (Common chords/progressions?)

Asked by MisterBlueSky85 (892points) May 1st, 2008

So I play piano, have for years. I LOVE playing bluesy stuff, and as I’m sure most of you are aware, a lot of blues rely on some pretty basic chord progressions. For instance, this is a pretty standard 12-bar blues progression:

I—> I—> I—> I7—> IV—> IV—> I—> I—> V—> IV—> I—> V

Just wanted to know if you guys knew any other really neat progressions, or chords, or awesome blues songs I should check out. For instance, “Oh! Darling!” by the Beatles taught me a lot about when to use II7, a chord I hadn’t considered before.

Thoughts?
