Do you think Origins skincare is as natural as they advertise it to be?

Asked by pkuttner (150points) July 31st, 2011

I am pregnant and I recently bought some Origins skincare products because I wanted face wash and lotion that didn’t have any parabens, pthalates, petrolatum, etc. Origins advertises that they don’t use these ingredients. Do you think their products are safe to use during pregnancy?

They are probably safe to use during pregnancy. Origins states that it doesn’t have all the “baddies” you mentioned but it also says that it “uses organic materials, potent plants and essential oils.” Using organic materials is not the same as a 100 percent organic product. It would be like me saying that I was using “some organic veggies” in my salad…that doesn’t make it purely organic. That’s the distinction. So, it will be okay as it doesn’t have the chemicals you mentioned. But if you were looking for a 100 percent organic, back to the land, salt of the earth, isn’t owned by big gigantic corporation called “Estee Lauder”.....skincare. I would not go with Origins.

Here’s a site with lots of small, specialized brands many of which are small companies that are really as close to nature (in some cases) as possible. And you are supporting smaller businesses, too. Some of the older, well-established brands that have always had incredibly high standards for being as close to nature as possible are Annemarie Borlind, Dr Hauschka and Weleda….but there are a lot of others now.

But don’t worry, Origins is fine. I just like shopping and helping smaller companies that don’t sell in malls.
