Would you buy a Fluther Short Story: The Book?

Asked by richardhenry (12692points) May 4th, 2008

As in, this epic novel: http://www.fluther.com/disc/12562/ .

I’ve written and edited the whole copy and condensed it into book format. It’s available now and being published by Lulu.

It costs £3, or just under $6. Available in many other countries too. Five pence from every sale (about 10 cents) goes to cancer research UK, and I don’t make any money (nor does anyone else). Also available as a free download.

You can buy as a paperback or download from:
http://www.notorange.co.uk/flutherstory

Sorry if there’s any mistakes anywhere, although I’ve given it a thorough proofread and ordered a copy for myself.

Good job everyone. :)

Haha thanks. I should probably do some real work now. :)

O.M.G. Talk about a labor of love. Hats off, two thumbs up, and a ‘great question’ for richardhenry!

wildflower's avatar

Just finished reading…...bizarrely it flows and is very readable….although it leaves you with no idea how you got from point A to point B (or C,D,E….etc.)
It’s brilliant!

richardhenry's avatar

Yeah, I managed to string together the sentences that didn’t quite work, but for the most part it was amazing already. I can’t believe how well that ‘coherent story’ turned out!

wildflower's avatar

Btw…..nice touch with the ‘Tell me something bad’ at the end :)

TheHaight's avatar

yes, I’ll try and buy it. Thankyou rh.

Hellooo's avatar

It was fun. It will take some beating.

Peedub mentioned getting his grandma to do an audio version. If anyone actually does do that, I’ll happily publish it on the book site. :)

Allie's avatar

Haha, that’s so funny. Wow.. we are published authors.

finally found the thread that spawned the beaked alien phenomena:

You’re amazing, richardhenry! We all owe you a drink….

peedub's avatar

I will definitely buy a copy. Will you sign my copy, RichardHenry?

richardhenry's avatar

Does anyone feel like writing a Lulu review? Haha.

Allie's avatar

I think Peedub should do it. Hes excellent at writing blurbs about things. Have you read his amazing travel descriptions? Pure genius. =]

C’mon, Peedizzle. ;-]

wildflower's avatar

How’s this:
As a spur of the moment initiative, drawing on the creativity of over 30 users of www.fluther.com, “A collective Nordic love story with
tree penguins, beaked aliens and whiskey.” is a unique experience.

Although lacking a strong or clear story-line, this short story, comprised of over 600 6-words-or-less sentences, stands out as a feat of collective innovation and imagination.

Despite its structure and thanks to some good editing (although minimal), the story is very easy to read and will offer some good laughs along the way.
By the end you’re left with a feeling of astonishment and puzzle, while highly entertained.

haven’t created a lulu account yet, so I’ll just post here

sccrowell's avatar

Amen, to that… And absolutely YES!! I will buy 3 books. Again, I would like to thank one and all for taking part in such a great little story! What imagination you all have. So, to “richardhenry as well as everyone else who took part. A job well done!

peedub's avatar

@Wild- Awesome!

wildflower's avatar

Thanks – if you guys wanna use it (full or part), feel free.

sccrowell's avatar

I second @wildflower. Richardhenry, YOU ROCK! I just purchased two in book form, from LuLu.. Maybe you will come out with a updated version. Perhaps there will be a book signing some day, eh? <grin>

It was a story that begged to be told. A saga that demanded to be shared with the entire world. Thanks to you, richardhenry, the world now knows the true tale. And one can’t help but feel that all of mankind is just a bit better off for it. Stand ready fluther friends as surely a sequel will be solicited.

peedub's avatar

Solicited and celebrated, the undying saga conjures images found only at the lesser-travelled regions of the psyche. At times, illusive like the mighty narwhal, others, like a heap of fresh Mink Oil lodged into the nasal cavity. An epic of mighty proportions, paralleled only by such works as the Kalevala and The Chroicles of Elric of Melniboné.

whatthefluther's avatar

Its magnitude can be comfortably compared to another short story, Nikolai Gogol’s masterpiece “Diary of a Madman”.

Allie's avatar

Peedizzle, you are amazing!! =]
Another “blurb” masterpiece.

peedub's avatar

haha- blurb-o-nonsense!

I like WTF’s. I especially enjoy reading it with a dramatic ‘book critic on the radio’ voice.,’ or maybe even like James Lipton.

whatthefluther's avatar

The Fluther story defines existentialism in the 21st century. In time, its impact will surely exceed that of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “Notes from the Underground”.

peedub's avatar

“It makes my account of traveling through the boiling cauldrons of hell sound like a late night trip to the bathroom.”

-Dante Alighieri

“What can I say, I’m losing my mansion but I don’t care. It changed my life.”

peedub's avatar

Yeah, it was AMAZING. Great job RichardHenry, and thanks everyone!

I’m serious about getting my grandmother to read it. I just have to figure out the best way to record it.

wildflower's avatar

@whatthefluther and peedub
You guys really need to post those reviews – perhaps as a collective effort? Just to match the book….
You guys are just on fire!

wildflower's avatar

Right – I posted my review….....so the rest of ye: get posting!

I just bought it from lulu for my daughter. Thanks for doing all that Richard!

It’s been listed on Amazon for some reason, and without any artwork or description:

http://www.amazon.com/Short-Story-Written-Fluther-com/dp/B002AD438U?&camp=212361&linkCode=wsw&tag=fluthercom-20&creative=380797

I got a very confused PM from someone asking if I’d written a book analyzing social networking, or something. :D

augustlan's avatar

Hahaha! Looks like LuLu listed it. Now if they could just print it correctly. Sigh.

richardhenry's avatar

@augustlan Mine printed fine? I even took photos. There’s some blank pages at the back, but that’s because of the page minimum.

augustlan's avatar

@richardhenry I bought one for mangeons, and every page is printed so that words run off the edges. It’s pretty much unreadable. :(
I think Andrew had a similar problem.

augustlan's avatar

@richardhenry Yours looks perfect. Ours has about 3 inches of white space in the middle, and none at the edges!

richardhenry's avatar

@augustlan I propose we give Lulu a thorough beating.

augustlan's avatar

Let the beatings commence.

The writers/editors shall be spared.

arnbev959's avatar

I have a copy in my Amazon cart. I was about to finalize the order, but I figured I’d snoop around Fluther first.

After finding and reading this thread, I’m not sure what to do. Is my book going to lack a margin like @augustlan‘s?

Someone give me advice?

richardhenry's avatar

My copy came out okay. If it does print incorrectly, Amazon should be able to issue a refund or send another.

It might be the case that Lulu changed the way that they print the books and that’s why only the first few were okay. I’m not sure and haven’t really got the time to investigate.

I guess the best you can say is at your own risk.
