What happened to Summer?

Asked by Blueroses (18256points) August 19th, 2011

Winter snows fell well into April; rainy Spring season came in and stayed through most of July. I never saw the glaring, oppressive sunshine I associate with Summer. Already, there is the low-level soft light that reminds me of Fall and the leaves are starting to turn. My dad predicts a harsh and early Winter (he’s a weather savant).

Is it axial tilt? Is this a strange year everywhere?

It is still pretty hot here especially for Mid August. In fact I don’t remember an August this warm. Mix of dry and wet spells really has things mixed up at best. I hope your dad is dead nuts wrong too!

Yep, it sucks here too Holland.
The Mediterrenean is hot though for months already, so I guess summer moved there.

In Oregon our summer has been really mild. I actually bought a Air Conditioner in May but I haven’t needed to install it yet.

Here in England Town our summer officially ended on July 10th, it said so on the news!!

I’m in NE Ohio, and can attest that we have had (and are still having) summer. July was almost oppressive on many days. August has been better, not so hot and humid. We’ll see how the rest of the month goes. Personally, I’m hoping for an early and long autumn.

Apparently most of summer stayed in the south central US this year.

There wasn’t much of a Summer here in Tacoma in which there have been mostly cool cloudy days with quite a bit of rain. We just had a record cold and wet Winter and Spring and lately I see leaves falling.

Maybe the recent earth quake in Japan is at fault.

I think the UK had it’s Summer in April this year…

Where are you? Europe? (I heard they had bad summer.)

Here (US) it was hot as blazes from late spring on.

incendiary_dan's avatar

July was stupid hot here, but it has cooled down in the last couple of weeks. Now it’s just annoyingly muggy because of all the rain.

@tedibear, I live in central Ohio. It’s been rather hot here, also. One good thing, though. The sun has been shining for almost all of summer so far- big, bright, and beautiful!

So, my summer moved southeast? Y’all owe me some sunny days.

…damn girl. If you want Summer, come over to Québec. Two consecutive Summers of non stop scorching heat, and nothing else. No rain, no fuck all, just blue African skies and heat heat HEAT. (although we have had one worthy storm, and a bit more rain this year) Last year, people were even warned not to waste too much water washing cars and sprinkling lawns, due to an extreme dry spell. (forest fires galore, too)

I for one, cannot wait for my queen, Winter. I hate all this damn blasted heat. :( Makes me physically sick, and depressed. We’ve been having weak Winters, too. This is fuckin Canada we’re talkin bout here.

Yeah, what did happened to Summer? It was like Spring the who dang time. Where was the HEAT!? I am very dissapointed.

wundayatta's avatar

I know the folks in Texas will laugh at this, but we had five days of triple digit heat in a row here in Philly. That has never happened before. I’ll trade you a few of our summer days for a few of yours. Oh, and I’ll throw in the humidity for free!

We’ve had the same year as @Blueroses. Though the word is that we are to have a nice long fall. I say it’ll seem long because it’s already started!! This is Alberta. Where are you, @Blueroses?

linguaphile's avatar

@Blueroses I’m noticing the same thing in Minnesota and Montana… Leaves already have turned in Washington and there’s one tree at work that is always the first to turn- I plan to take a look tomorrow!

We had two weeks in April, that was it for this year.

April was nice, but it has been wet and cool ever since with the occasional lovely day. September can be nice. Here’s hoping.

I’m in the Rocky Mt high plains, south of you @faye. Our weather pattern picks up in Puget Sound, circles through BC and AB then drops to us and peters out somewhere in southern CO.
And it’s plenty humid here @wundayatta and we aren’t used to it, so no extra necessary.
