Do animals have souls?

Asked by HungryGuy (16044points) September 9th, 2011

For that matter, do humans have souls? What is a soul anyway? Is an aura really a sign of a soul, or is it merely an artifact of electromagnetic activity such as found around an electromagnet or Tesla coil?

If we do, they do. We’re just animals ourselves, just with more pretensions.

And I’m willing to bet that souls themselves are probably just electromagnetism, if they exist.

In before stupidity!

I agree with Dan ^ “If we do, they do.”
There is no proof of souls to my knowledge so…

I remember going home angry and really ticked off and stressed. My dogs did not recognize me and to my surprise I was being barked at really aggressively. I feel that dogs visualize different tones of human auras, easily. Human auras have more range than that of an inanimate object, this is certain. It can even be seen on Google through Kirlian Photography.

I’m skeptical of the existence of such a thing.

Dan wrong.

We do, they don’t.

Sure, it’s up to you to believe in, since we don’t even know what a soul is or if it exists.

Do insects have souls? How far are we willing to go with the comparison that since we’re all animals we must, therefore, all have souls?

I can’t bring myself to believe in animism. There can be no doubt that there is something dissimilar between humans and other “animals”. I submit that one such dissimilarity is a soul. My reasons go far beyond the scope of this question, but suffice it to say that I am not undecided (agnostic) nor do I lack beliefs (atheist).

See, pretensions. :P

If the soul is something humans made up, then do fantasy beings have souls?

@digitalimpression – No probs :-) I gave everyone who answered a GA (yes, even @Dan).

Notice how I’m trying my best to stay neutral?

If the soul of a certain person weighs 21 grams and he decides to lose weight, will his soul also become lighter?

everephebe's avatar

Dan right.^
We don’t, they don’t.

Damn it! Someone tell me what I missed!

@Blackberry – You didn’t miss anything. So far, it’s staying reasonably civil.

Yes, I believe that we do and they do.

There is a part of the body that departs on death, some call it a soul, but there is no proof of just what it is, but it is found in all higher level mammals, which includes Dogs, Cats, Horses, Monkeys, etc.

There is evidence that it does exist, it is up for debate weather or not it is a soul.

I think we are all energies. Maybe that’s what the “soul” is. It’s a form of energy. And the higher forms of life——man, monkeys, dogs, etc., have much greater energies or more of a soul than the lower forms like fish and insects. When we pass on, these energies get released and assume physical bodies again in future lives.

I don’t believe in the concept of the soul, and I don’t believe there is anything “magical” about auras.

I look into my dog’s eyes and I see her soul.

I think souls and spirits are what we call the parts of our brains we don’t understand, or how confusing emotions can be. I don’t believe in them, so to me, nothing has a soul.

I don’t have a soul, you don’t have a soul, there’s no such thing as a soul!

That was a quote.

Moving on. I’d like to think there’s more to living beings than some sharpened survival instinct, and maybe there is. Sometimes it’s hard to think there isn’t. But I really don’t think there is, either for animals or humans.

My border collie is the soul man of our house.

Yes.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Emotions, yes. If that defines a soul, yes. Just like us.

filmfann's avatar

What pet owner could deny that animals have emotions?
Emotions have nothing to do with having a soul.
The issue has nothing to do with self-awareness, or intelligence.

Ltryptophan's avatar

Yeah, I’d say so.

athenasgriffin's avatar

Yes, animals have souls. Completely sure of it. If you can love, you have a soul.
