How do you have your jewelry stored so that it's accessible and yet easy to view and choose?

Asked by jca (36062points) September 18th, 2011

I have a problem with storing my jewelry. I have drawers of little cardboard boxes from department stores. It’s hard to view the jewelry, time consuming to open each box and see what’s in it, and view the jewelry to see what I have without taking a lot of time to pick and put it on. The little boxes take up a lot of space.

How is your jewelry stored so that you can view it all, choose it and yet keep it safely?

My best friend put up a corkboard in her room with hooks in it. She hangs necklaces, non-post earrings and bracelets there. This is for her jewelry from Avon or other less expensive places. Anything that is better, goes in a jewelry box.

What about a flat box with compartments and a clear lid? I don’t know what your storage situation is, so I don’t know how well that would work.

@tedibear: I do have a small clear plastic box with compartments (made for embroidery floss or something like that) that i use for earrings, but I only put the less expensive earrings in it. More expensive earrings I don’t want clanking around with each other, and it doesn’t solve the problem of bracelets and necklaces, as they’re too big and don’t fit.

Hanging organizer!

I have something similar to this ordered from Target.com. Little clear pockets work great.

I have something much like this hanging on my wall. Nice too, because necklaces don’t get tangled up in each other.

I have a huge metal flower earring rack on the counter in my bathroom with about 60 pairs of earrings, and several hooks on the wall that hold dozens of necklaces.

Actually it is all a bit out of control right now, and is one of my projects soon, to thin the herd. lol

Trying to keep all the necklaces untangled is a major feat and sometimes, of course, the one I want is behind about 20 others and it takes about 10 minutes to carefully take down all the other ones to get to it.

I have a jewelry ‘window’ that my sister made for my birthday and I have since added to. Basically, buy some ‘oops’ paint at the hardware store in a few different colors you like for $1 or so each, buy some wooden frames and a decent amount of metal mesh, one that’s tightly woven (so that only a pencil head would go through the holes).

Paint the frames, staple the mesh to the inside, hang and display jewelry.

The frames can be added to as well with fun accents, mine are painted shades of blue and purple with unmatched white buttons from a craft store. I also have a small one that is used exclusively for post earrings so I can just pull it off the wall and grab them without looking for their matching pieces in a big drawer pile. It makes a fun project, you can size it to fit in your bathroom or bedroom and you get wall art out of it too!

Bonus: It’s super cheap and you can make the whole thing in a couple hours.

On my antique vanity, there is a lowered surface between the tower of drawers on either side. A top this is where I keep a huge 16” china platter that my jewelry lays in. I don’t have a lot of pieces anymore so there’s not a lot to sort through.

My grandmother had a ton of jewelry, and she stored it all on the inside of her bedroom closet door. Hooks for bracelets and necklaces and plastic pockets for earrings.

I don’t wear mine very often, so I just have it in a large jewelry box.

jca I love bracelets and I have found that the drawer organizers made for socks work well for bracelets. I like to color code my jewelry so it’s quick to choose something to match my outfit.

I have a standing jewelry armoire that I use for the stuff I wear frequently. It has lots of drawers with compartments small enough for earrings. I put more than one pair in each compartment but I group them by color. Most of my jewelry is costume jewelry or semi precious stones, not anything expensive so I don’t worry much about scratching it. For long or chunky necklaces a wall mounted set of hooks works well to keep them untangled. I like this one!

I use this type of hanging closet organizer.

I keep jewelry for spring/summer in one and winter/fall in the other.

As often as I can I store items in the exact place I need things. In this case, I prefer to pick my jewelry when I pick out my outfit, shoes and if applicable scarf/belt/purse.
