Is it normal to get really emotional during your period? (Details)?

Asked by Ayesha (6218points) September 27th, 2011

Is it normal to have so much emotion flow in at a time, making you cry a lot and feel vulnerable?

Do you believe it to be negative energy at some level? What is with this pressure around this time, making one so emotional?

Also, please do share with us, if you have, a different take on it other than ‘hormones’.

I’d say its normal, we have several decades worth of stand up comedy based on it.

What else would it be, besides hormones? I thought the general consensus was that some women experience a change from the hormones.

I’m not a girl, and I should watch what I say because I have at least two x’s and one current g/f on here…........ But yes it is definitely normal… lol…. My assumption is just the hormones honestly.

It is fluctuations in hormone levels. Why would there be a different explanation?

Ayesha's avatar

@marinelife I’m not saying there is one. People have their beliefs and opinions, therefore I stated that if that were the case, they share those with us.

@Ayesha Belief is not in question here. There are scientific facts involved.

Ayesha's avatar

@marinelife I agree. But I still did want to keep it open for people who might want to answer differently.

@Ayesha I’ve studied enough biology and reproduction that it makes me wonder how you ladies handle the fluctuations in the different hormones.

Ayesha's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe I handle them horribly. I hate the ‘bitter me’ that I become.

@Ayesha I don’t have any scientific proof, but fish oil supplements seem to help. My s/o used to get horrible cramps, to the point she’d just lie on the floor, but since we’ve been taking the capsules she hasn’t seemed to get them. Maybe it would help?

Ayesha's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe If they seem to work that well I’ll definitely give them a try.

They’re also supposed to be anti inflammatory. Get the gel caps, no fishy taste.

Thanks! Sounds good.

Yes, I get incredibly emotional. So mich that one minute I’ll be crying my eyes out and the next I will be laughing. I feel as if I am insane during that time.

I get really emotional when I’m PMSing. Songs will make me randomly tear up, and the last couple of days I often get somewhat suicidal. Luckily, I’ve figured this out, so I can just curl up in bed and know it will be better in a couple days, but it’s rough. I’ve heard that Yaz/Yasmin sometimes help with PMDD, though I myself didn’t have a particularly good experience with them.

But, I don’t think it’s anything other than hormones. Hormones are quite powerful.

Completely normal. At one point yesterday, I was complaining uncontrollably about everything… and then sitting on the couch crying – freaking out over life… and then was calm for a while… and about two hours later, I was moving about and off making brownies – perfectly fine. It’s kind of ridiculous, but it’s the hormones, so at least we have an excuse – and at least it goes away!

Men like to complain about dealing with these mood swings we have.. but how do they think we feel, living in them? Having no control over your emotions.. sucks.

Scary to believe, but yes, I actually do get more emotional during “that time of the month.” I say that it is sorry to believe because my emotions are usually on a roller-coster anyway- I’m bipolar. I really hate using the word “normal,” but I’m praying for menopause, so my hormones will be “normal.”
