Conspiracy theories aside, if you were a straight actor in Hollywood, would you do a movie where you would have to dress in drag or do gay scene?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) September 28th, 2011

Looking at this clip by David Chappelle it made me thing, there has been a lot of actors who have dressed in drag, way more than actresses doing so. However, I think there have been slightly more lesbian themes or shots than gay scene, might not be accurate, I could have just missed a lot. I got to thinking as Chappelle did, if I didn’t know there was a drag scene in the movie or show, I would not capitulate and wear it. If I knew there was a drag or gay scene from the start, I would not sign on to do it. Even if they would boot me from the show and I would lose money, so be it. If you were an actor, and they wanted to put you in a dress, would you do it? Is it better for a woman to dress like a man? If you were straight would you play gay? Would the money you would earn play a decision if you would or not?

If I thought I was good enoguh to pull it off I’d try. I don’t know if my acting would be good enough, it seems like it would be a hard thing to do.

Jim Carrey in I love you Phillip Morris comes to mind. To me his performance as a gay man in that movie made me realize he is a serious and talented actor as well as a funny guy.

If you were and actor, your job would to play a character. The characters that actors play are simply that; they don’t define them. Any actor who is not up to the task maybe shouldn’t be in the business, but that is up to them. But, if you weren’t willing to do that, it would really be your loss, I think and, if you were actually a good enough, or great actor, our loss too, because then we never would have had films like Some Like It Hot or Kiss Of The Spiderwoman or The Crying Game. You may not care for those films, but they are three of my favorites.

I have factored out your typos and gramattical errors, against better judgement thought to answer this – and then realized, again, I have no idea what you are on about. What conspiracy theory? If I’m an actor – I act.

Actors rarely play themselves.

@zensky Pst…did you ever get around to viewing the clip? :-P

You go where the money is, within reason of course. I’d portray a gay guy, but I ain’t kissing no fella!! Just camp it up a bit, second nature really.

Sure! Why not.
I think this question was meant for men. Point is, if i were an actor, I’d do it!

Sean Connery, Wesley Snipes, and Jeff Bridges have all done it, and no one thinks of them in a girly way (except maybe Snipes cell mate).
I wouldn’t have an issue with it.

Depends on the actress. Zoey Daschenel, YES! Charlize Theron… YES! Scarlette Johansen…YES!

Betty White?... Uhhh, I’m STRAIGHT! and I refuse to upset the integrity of my life for a role! Respect me!

I’m totally secure in my masculinity. I wouldn’t think twice about doing it.

Depends on the story and if I wanted to do the movie based on that. If the storyline was strong enough and I felt I could do the charactor justice then yes, I would.

What does doing your job as an actor have to do with conspiracy theories?

I just saw “Gosford Park”: Several brilliant British actors with knighthoods happily play the downstairs staff, a scruffy lot.. to wit; Helen Mirron, Derek Jacoby, Alan Bates, Eileen Atkens.

Dustin Hoffman played an idiot savant
Patrick Swayze played Priscilla
Brad Pitt played a 90-year-old man
Jude Law played a southern American red neck (Cold Mountain)
Jose Ferrer played a midget (Toulouse-Lautrec)

Sure, I could dress as a man or do a gay scene, no problem!

And I too, am really confused about what this has to do with conspiracy theories.

@gailcalled I need to watch Rain Man again, my favourite film.

Of course I would (although the odds of me being entirely straight are as tiny as the odds of me being a Hollywood actor). And honestly? Doing a gay scene is a HUGE boost to the attention you get from female fans.

To address the crossdressing part, I think the main reason you see more movies with men dressing as women rather than the other way round, is because it’s unusual, noticeable and often funny. A woman dressed as a man? Women wear mens clothes all the time. It’s boring. Boring does not make a blockbuster.

If I’m ac actor, I probably wouldn’t worry about stuff like that. I’d just do it, if they found me acceptable for the part.

I have— I’m an actress and have dressed as a man—a tough Harley biker, complete with a goatee. Nobody could tell I was me until I ‘gasped.’ Apparently, I have a distinctive gasp. It was fun!!
I didn’t have to kiss a girl (and like it) though.

I, too, am totally secure in @wundayatta ‘s masculinity and wouldn’t think twice if he did it.

@gailcalled @WillWorkForChocolate It was a thought of David Chappelle, did you look at the clip, or just missed that part of the clip?

wundayatta's avatar

Oh @zensky. You make my heart go pitty-pat!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central Yeah, I watched it, but Dave Chappelle is a comedian who makes money from saying funny things and nonsensical things that make you think, “hmmm”. Dressing in drag or doing a gay scene has nothing to do with conspiracy theories. Dave was being funny and sarcastic by suggesting that black actors always get thrown into dresses. White actors have also dressed in drag and done gay scenes for movies. I don’t see any conspiracy theory surrounding actors/actresses dressing in drag and playing gay roles.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate That is why I said to put aside any presumed thoughts of any conspiracy and when just on would you dress in drag or so a gay scene of you were and actor or actress, and especially if they sprung it on you and you didn’t know about the scene before you took the role? I don’t care about if a conspiracy was behind it or not.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central Ahhh, ok, gotcha. I read it wrong and was under the impression that you went along with Chappelle’s idea or something. Sorry.

lonelydragon's avatar

Yes, I would. It would be a great opportunity (and a lot of fun) to break out in a new direction.

Dressing in women’s clothes seems to be a mainstay of British comedy. Milton Berle used to do it a lot too. I never thought it was funny, just stupid. No, I wouldn’t do it because I would have to shave off my mustache.

I did, when I was going to electronics school, dress in a WAVES uniform with a mop wig and entered a charity beauty contest. I won! I am pretty sure that I won because of the sailors’ appreciation of perverse irony. I didn’t look very good. There is still, 40 years later a polaroid of that picture floating around. I intend to destroy it when I find it.

@Ron_C: Don’t be silly. Post it here or on Fluther’s facebook page.

@gailcalled first of all, I haven’t seen it for years, second “Post it here”, not a chance.
