Over the last month, what decisions have you made or actions have you taken to enhance your life?

Asked by Bellatrix (21307points) October 6th, 2011

Inspired by Steve Jobs death and my reflection about what I am achieving in my own life, I have decided to spend one day a week ‘unplugged’ from the internet. I have decided that being ‘unplugged’ for one day a week would encourage me to connect with my family more and do things I haven’t been doing like painting, taking photos, cooking new things, writing that novel I keep talking about.

So what about you? Thinking back over the last month, what decisions have you made or actions have you taken to enhance the quality of your life? I am not talking about “I worked hard at work” or “I went for a bike ride” unless riding your bike is about enhancing your life and is something you haven’t been doing.

A very thought provoking question…and after thinking about it . . . I could say that nothing is worth mentioning.

Thanks for asking anyway.

I think it would be taking some off to spend with my parents as they live far and I don’t see them often.

Self imposed anger management.

I have a theory I have always adhered to and it always holds true for me.

“All idealists will need anger management eventually.”

I am an idealist unfortunately and it often makes me angry and anger breeds poor decisions.

I have been trying not to be both; quite so much an idealist and a lot less angry as a result.

I spent 2 weeks de-cluttering my house, and it felt very liberating. I even gave away some of my precious books. It was difficult to contemplate, but now that it’s done, I feel so much lighter.

GabrielsLamb's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake I could never do that. Books are like limbs for my brain.

I’m reworking my sleeping schedule to a more regular thing again after getting into the habit if staying up late all summer. I am making myself go to bed no later than 11 and, preferably more like 10–10:30 to feel my optimum. I’m one of those types that wake up early no matter what time I go to bed, sooo…after weeks of running on 6 hours of sleep I am so ready for winter bedtime hours.

I also am reeling in my hedonistic streak again, I have been waaay too over indulgent this year. I always seem to be between two poles…overworked and underweight or underworked and overweight.
Getting and staying in the middle is a real challenge for me. lol

Great question.
I’ve stopped spending time with those I find draining to be around. I feel as though I’m putting myself first and looking after my own needs in that respect.
I’ve also been taking life less seriously which is having a wonderful effect on me.

I’ve decided to give in to my creativity. I am always struggling to fight it. Now that I am getting it all out – drawing, writing, planning, anything that comes to mind – I am MUCH more happier! I feel more fulfilled and that life (and myself) isnt as gray and lifeless as I was beginning to see it as, and that the possibilities are endless. :) Now I am struggling with which path to take – but one thing at a time ;)

I’m redoubling my efforts to learn how to control my anxiety.

“Redoubling”? Don’t stress it @Mariah!

Nothing this month. Plenty at moment throughout my life.

I continue to pursue personal growth, patience, and tolerance. I try to meditate and see the world as a good place. I have pursued a better relationship with my wife and a better attitude towards coworkers. It ain’t easy! :)

I started taking the 100-pushup challenge. I’m up to 80 consecutive pushups 4 weeks in!

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard crap! that’s awesome! OK! I started doing sit ups again, this month…I’m up to 60 a day now!

TexasDude's avatar

@Dutchess_III good job! At the beginning of the summer, I was maxing out at 10 pushups and 15 situps. 4 Weeks ago, I started the pushup challenge and I’m at 80 pushups. Over the summer, I got to 120 situps. (This is me sending you encouragement and positive vibes. You can kick ass!)

Dutchess_III's avatar

Man…pushups have always kicked my butt! I mean…..2 and I’m done! Sit ups progress really fast though. I just am seriously impressed with you! I’d say, “send pics” but…that would give the wrong impression! (send pics!!! Before and during and after, you know! :) I’m feeling encouraged too

Hey…you have a really big boiling pot I could borrow? Coloma’s going to be here soon..

Coloma's avatar

Well…before you all get too self disciplined, here, have a happy brownie. lol

Dutchess_III's avatar

O! Thank you! You ARE the best goose in the WORLD! Srsly mean that!

TexasDude's avatar

@Dutchess_III well I don’t really have any before pics, but this is me about ten minutes ago. Lost 20 lbs over the course of the summer. Most of Fluther has never seen me partially naked anyway, so I guess there’s no time like the present!

I have changed from a vegetarian to a vegan diet and was feeling terrific…until I contracted a really nasty case of the flu this week.

GabrielsLamb's avatar

@Coloma Anything in the brownie besides nuts? Hmmm, hmmmm?

I began a PhD program, I applied and accepted an adjunct position to teach Sociology, something I’ve wanted to do for awhile. I supported my partner in moving to London for work for 3 months (which would improve his career and salary thereby improving our life, somewhat).

@GabrielsLamb

Oh, you don;t know my happy brownie joking very well yet, of course, they are brownies of the most delicate herbal essence. lol

Coloma's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard

You weren’t snapping that for C’sList casual encounters were you?
hahahaha

TexasDude's avatar

@Coloma, nope! I snapped it just because @Dutchess_III asked!

What a great question! I don’t know if this counts, but I’ve been working on mitigating my fibro pain by improving my daily environment. In the last month or so, I’ve replaced my old desk chair (which was like this one) with one more suitable for sitting in 12+ hours a day, purchased a pair of Crocs tennis shoes (which are like walking on marshmallows and surprisingly, not too ugly), and added a memory foam mattress topper to my old bed (it just came today, so no review yet).

My hope is that these things will improve my situation so that I feel well enough to try other steps in this direction, like yoga.

[mod says] This is our Question of the Day!

Dutchess_III's avatar

In the process of buying 5 wooded acres with a pond. : )

Auggie…is it the law that you have to call on your alternate personality to say “This is the question of the day!? You can’t say it as your real self? : ) They have drugs for that, you know!

augustlan's avatar

@Dutchess_III Haha! Sometimes I do, but I often don’t decide until later that’s it’s the QOTD. :p

Bellatrix's avatar

Thank you @Auggie for the Question of the Day award. How lovely.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It’s a good feeling @Bellatrix! I got one once. :) Congrats!
