Google maps.

Appadvice is free today, and seems to be a good source for reviews. App reviews are organized by function, so the apps are easy to compare.

@XD Interesting that you should mention AppAdvice.com since I work there as a staff writer. ;)

So here is one AppList on navigation.
And here is a comparison between some of the top GPS apps.

Really though- it depends a lot on what you want to do with it. Are you hiking, driving, exploring?

Where will you be using it the most?

Give us more details and I might be able to point you toward my favorites.

@Dog Just downloaded it. Great app, thanks for putting it free today!

@Dog, neat! That’s cool!

@Rarebear I will tell the guys that you appreciate the sale! It is a great app!

@XD So tell me- what are you interested in as far as GPS Apps? You would be amazed at the apps out there for each use. Let me know how you want to use it! The app devs often give us use of the app for testing so I might really be able to help you here.

I don’t, generally, except for Google Maps. I’m excited, though, for me and my gang to try Maprika this ski season.

My BIL uses Map My Run(?) or something like that with regularity.

@Dog – Thanks for the tip, that is a neat little app!

I use runkeeper.com but am thinking about a real GPS app at a later date.

@Rarebear, Thanks for your help, I live in a semi-rural part of New Mexico and need a GPS to get to difficult-to-find towns and villages. After going to Appadvice.com, I purchased Navigon and can’t wait to try it out today.

Thanks again.

Navigon is one of my very favorites!

I love that once you purchase the traffic once you never pay for it again. (Unlike other apps where it is a subscription) Also the 3d is worth it too. The best part of that one for me is that is shows you which lane you need to be in at upcoming intersections and freeway breaks- this is a life saver for me. I never bothered with buying Zagat ratings though- so if you do let me know if it is worth it.

Oh- just to let you know: when running a GPS on the iPhone keep it plugged in for longer jaunts. (I am sure you already knew that but maybe someone else reading this would not know)

Also- it can make your iDevice hot. So do not do as I did once and lay it on the dash with the sun behind it. The phone got hot enough to shut itself down till it cooled. I keep it either on the center console or in a cup holder where I can see it.
