Noisy neighbors: Do you shush them or ignore them?

Asked by digitalimpression (9920points) November 4th, 2011

At this very moment my upstairs neighbors are making a lot of racket. It’s clear that they are just having a good time and I tend to just ignore them. What do you do in this situation?

If it’s an occasional thing don’t be a weenie about it.
If it’s several times a week or more I’d have a little talk with them face to face, no passive aggressive note leaving on doors.
Quite frankly you don’t know what noise is until you live next door to a herd of donkeys, sheep and mules. I get a Jackass foghorn roust every morning, along with the geese and roosters. haha

But…real Jackasses are always preferable to the two legged kind.

It depends on how late it is, what kind of racket it is, and what day of the week it is. Weekend nights, I try to let it go, unless it’s really loud every weekend night – where if I was having my own get-together, we’d be seriously disrupted. During the day, I’ll let it go for a couple hours, so long as it isn’t too bad (like music with really heavy base will give me a headache, or if they’re fighting). After midnight on weeknights, though? If it isn’t sex, I’ll say something. But sex? Let ‘em have their fun.

I tend to agree with you both. My wife is a little different. I’m amazed she’s sleeping through this right now. Then again it is really late…. erhm….. early….

What do you mean by having a “good time” exactly?

digitalimpression's avatar

@Male I can’t really be sure. Sounds like a herd of buffaloes playing twister to me.

Honestly, I wouldn’t get the downstairs apartment. Kind of comes with the territory. It sucks.

@jonsblond Well it used to be my kids who would get complained about. I’d rather be on the whiner side than the whinee side.. XD

It depends how late, how often the noise happens, and how much it is really bothering me.

New neighbors have just moved in, next door to me. I am sure the realtor has told them that I am a retired police officer.

One afternoon, I met my new neighbors. All three are college students at Vanderbilt. All three are in their early 20s and all three appear to be good people and males. We talked for about 15 minutes and they stated that they sometimes will have a party and their music may be a little loud. I told them that was okay, that I wear hearing aids and that I was a cool person and loved music myself. Our meeting ended on a good understanding.

Last weekend, they decided to have a Halloween party. One of the guys came to tell me of their party and that I was invited. I said thank you, but I had other plans. He also stated that if their party became too loud, to knock on the door and advise them.

Needless to say, I was shocked at his words. How many people have ever knocked on your door to tell, what this college student told me?

I came in really late the next morning(3:15 am) and their party was still happening. They were having a good time and not bothering anyone, so I went to bed and to sleep.

I am fortunate to have new neighbors that think of others, before themselves.

I am blessed.

I have only twice had noisy neighbors above me in the last few years. On both occasions I had to say something and then report one to the managers of the complex.

One was a mother and her two young kids. Never any noise until she left the kids with Mom. Then it sounded like the they were caving in on me for a couple of hours in the evening. After a few times, I went up and found daughter and mom and the kids. Mom was leaving. I mentioned what I was hearing and, apparently, Mom was just letting the kids jump off of furniture or whatever. Normal kids with no supervision. They told me it wouldnt happen anymore.

It did…repeatedly. So I went back up. This time the daughter got pissy…..and was kind enough to tell me she had heard me having sex. Which was news to me since I couldnt remember having sex since they had been there. But at least she had a good imagination. Since she was that bold, maybe I should have asked her if she would care to join me having sex.

The other incidence(s) was two young women (19–20). Except, there were always 4 guys in the place with them every evening and they loved to sit out on the balcony and talk, all of which was fine…..except that they slid the glass door open and shut 10–15 times (I counted) every five minutes to get drinks. Think about it. Six people, each going inside to fix themselves a drink. Opening and shutting the door 20–30 times every five minutes. (10–15 times round trip makes 20–30 times per slide). After an hour, I could hardly endure it. I called the security officer.

We live in a detached rental house so we ignore whatever is annoying such as the neighbor who picks early mornings of weekends to jackhammer and re do his backyard which backs up to our own. I’d only suggest shushing if the noises go on after 11pm at night or cause us worry like crying kids, animals that sound like they’re suffering, band practice kids.

Ignore unless I have a massive migraine and their noise is prior to 7am or after Midnight.

In apartment/rental living we’d usually just get out for a bit if the noise was bugging us.

I call the police with the gun fire and fire works start. We live outside of a small town but on holidays like the 4th of July and New Years, it gets pretty loud. My dog is gun shy and I have flashbacks when the fireworks start. I try to be out of the country on the 4th of July.
