Mechanical Engineering Academic programs?

Asked by Jonathan_hodgkins (690points) February 29th, 2012

I am looking to go to school (undergrad) for mechanical engineering with a focus on prototyping and design. What schools would you recommend for this field? Are there any that have strong prototyping programs? I am currently located in the Northeast, but would be willing to relocate.

Any “Polytechnic Institute” or “Institute of Technology” will have a strong mechanical engineering program. But you have to be very sure that you want to study something in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathdmatics) field, because technical colleges usually offer very little else. To add a couple to the very good suggestions above, check out Olin College and WPI.

Well, I gotta recommend my alma mater and its Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Plus, as someone who changed majors in my senior year, it is nice to have a wide variety of disciplines to choose from as well.

Check out Cornell University. I went to the Ag School but shared a fraternity house with a lot of Engineering students. It’s a great place plus it has, if I remember right about 11 different schools so the diversity of courses is amazing. Plus Ithaca is a great place.

A lot of great universities are already listed. I can only add that you may find some useful instruction here if you need extra help on a subject or are just interested enough to learn more.
