Do you like jewelry made of found objects?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37346points) April 9th, 2012

I have 2 puka shell leis. One is the traditional kind made of naturally rounded bits of shell, and the other is made of whole but well-worn shells. Someone spent a lot of time beach combing to find all the shells for these 2 leis.

Have you ever found an item and turned it into jewelry?

Do you wear jewelry made of found objects?

While it’s certainly true that precious stones and gold, etc., can be classified as found objects, that’s not what I’m looking for in this question. Let’s talk about objects that wouldn’t normally be considered as precious.

I love beach glass jewelry or things made out of driftwood.

@marinelife : If you like things made of driftwood, then you should definitely see this site. I also love beach glass.

There have been a few pieces of jewelry that I have put together because I found some sort of statement piece and I wanted to wear it. One is a hand-painted butterfly that I put on a long gold chain. I don’t know how “found” it is, though. I was shopping in a bead store and saw it, so I made my own necklace.

I photographed a mimi spirit that I made out of driftwood, then i realized you said jewelery. I often do make jewelery out of pieces of wood I carve. I particularly like doing turtles! I don’t have any pics of them but here is the mimi!

Yes, actually I have/do. I love jewelry like this because it has a more natural and laid back look to it. I’ve never been a big fan of diamonds and gems (although, technically speaking they’re found items too) because they’re too stuffy looking for me. Like I said before, I like things that look natural, that look effortless when really, it’s the other way around.

Yes, I frequently make jewelry, wall hangings and mobiles out of found objects. I once made a table decoration out of a discarded piece of card-stock paper. It started out as a push-out perforated greeting, but the left over edges folded into a beautiful free form decoration.

I like all types of accessories like this, not just jewelry. I’d really love to have a bottle cap belt or a gum wrapper purse, but a lot of these “recycled” fashion accessories are kind of expensive for my shoestring budget. I guess I’ll just have to start saving up some materials and learn how to make my own!
