Approximately how much does a paralegal make?

Asked by Reggz (149points) May 15th, 2012

I’m looking for average salaries for paralegals in Canada and USA, but can’t seem to find much reliable information. Can anyone help me out?

I did a search that gave me a huge list of sites. Paralegal Today seems to be a good place to start. They break it down to working in Law Firms vs working in Corporations.

Awesome, thank you!

It probably also depends on the area of the country. In the area I work in, which is one of the most expensive areas in the country to live in, a paralegal might make $75k. Maybe more.

I think paralegals make decent money, but if you’re looking for the big bucks, I suggest law.

If you work for a law firm, you will make most of your money in overtime. In San Francisco, at a big firm, you will make $85,000+. If you work for a company, expect to make less, 60,000+, but work more or less, 9–5. The paralegals I know are all very happy with their career choice. A few have moved on to go to law school, but that was their aim in the first place. A lot of people don’t realize this, but a lot of what makes you a successful lawyer at a firm is your ability to “sell.”. That is, your ability to get the firm new clients – this takes a lot of effort and requires schmoozing outside the office. It’s not just about doing legal work – paralegals don’t have to worry about that aspect. I used to work in the legal dept of a SF company, btw.

@Gabby101 My BF is considering paralegal as a possible career choice if he doesn’t get into law school and I am in full support of it. I think paralegal is still an exciting and lucrative career choice.
