Have you received or given any random acts of kindness recently?

Asked by bookish1 (13159points) August 12th, 2012

Has someone been really kind to you out of the blue, or have you helped a stranger out recently?

I think I received the nicest random act of kindness of my life a week ago, when I had been traveling for more than 24 hours and awake for about 30… I was chatting with the woman next to me on my final plane home, and we had a nice conversation, and she and her husband ended up giving me a ride home from the airport (saving me a $40 cab fare, which would have been painful to pay) AND giving me some fresh produce from a farmer’s market! I have to figure out how to pay this one forward!

Someone let me merge.

This week I sent a book of poetry that I love to each of two flutherers who were down in the dumps.

“Good Poems for Hard Times,” edited by Garrison Keillor is a book that I pick up often.

They were used but in good condition and barely made a dent in my wallet.

PS. These two were both unmet friends, I should mention.

That was very kind, @gailcalled. When you plant seeds of kindness, you will reap the same.

I helped some lost tourists find their hotel. I also rescued an abandoned cat and helped some new neighbors move their stuff in their new home.

Not very recently, but I have had strangers and friends do amazing unexpected things for me in the past, and I have helped others. I firmly believe in pay it forward. The most recent I can think of, which was only a minor thing, was as my husband and I were finishing our meal at a restaurant about a month ago the skies had opened up and it was pouring. He ran to the car to bring it back for me while I waited at the entrance/exit, and during that time three older women walked out of the restaurant, one with a cane who did not walk very well. I told them to wait, and when my husband drove up I would get an umbrella from my car and walk them to their car. I jumped in our car and told my husband, and he got out and walked each one separately to their car. They were very appreciative. He figures we had clear weather on our Alaska trip a week later because we did that good deed (Alaska had just had weeks of rain before we arrived).

Here on fluther I think we do it all the time in a small way. Help each other. Especially when a jelly is feeling down or needs help.

There was a huge accident on the highway near my home today, and it shut down the road for over 4 hours. I saw a lot of kindness while people dealt with the resulting traffic jams all around the area. Everyone allowed others to merge easily, and people stuck on the highway who had folding chairs in their vehicles shared them with others (which was an interesting sight to see… people sitting in chairs all over the highway.)

I wasn’t stuck on the highway, but was in a crawling line of traffic trying to navigate around it, and stopped at a gas station for a desperately needed pee break, and I wasn’t the only one doing so. We were all mindful to be quick about our business, allowing others to take care of theirs. The chatter in the store was very convivial, too. Everyone in the same boat.

Also, a wonderful jelly sent me a book. :D

@augustlan: That story reminds me of when I was searching for a desperately needed pee break this summer during Pride in Paris… I ended up buying an expensive soda in a posh cafe just for the privilege of using their bathroom, and I found out that the damn bathroom was coin-operated, and I didn’t have enough coins! There were a bunch of other drunk Pride-goers in the bathroom, so we all colluded together and held the door open for each other, so that no one had to pay! More like mutual aid than an RoK though :)

Um… Usually, I’m the person everyone asks “what time is it?” or “which bus should I take”, or “how do I go there” (last time someone asked me for directions I was actually lost, haha.)

I was ringing a couple of people out at the store I’m employed at. It was a group of three friends who had pooled their money to buy their friend a birthday gift. They were short a couple bucks and had no more money . They were really upset. I gave the extra money out of my wallet. They were so appreciative.

One memorable act of kindness someone has done for me was a couple years back my friend and I had gone to a concert of one of our favorite bands at a huge venue. We were in nose bleed seats. In between the opening and headlining band we were walking around and these middle aged people approached us randomly and starter chatting. We talked to them a bit and they then asked us where we were sitting. We pointed and they said…how would you like front row!!? They were leaving and gave us their expensive ass seats for free! I hugged them. I won’t ever forget that

You are all good folks. I like what you and your husband did in the rain, @JLeslie. You too, @boxer3 and @Michael_Huntington. It is always nice to see when people work together. Especially when it comes to urinating. LOL Good stories @augustlan and @bookish1.

My boyfriend and I gave his friends, this couple, a ride to their hotel. It was purely coincidence we ran into them at the mall. These people were visiting from Alaska, my bf used to live and work there and he knew the guy, he worked with him. My bf hadn’t seen or talked to them in a long time, so that was a pleasant surprise for him. We ended up talking for a little bit at the mall and somehow my bf offered to drive them back to their hotel, which they accepted.

When my late husband and I were visiting France several years ago, of course we were lost and didn’t know our way around, so this guy offered to walk us to this grocery store, where we wanted to go in the first place. Our hotel room had a microwave, kitchen area so we wanted to stock up. He was very nice to us and we really appreciated his help. On the same note, on the flight to France, we were sitting, across from each other and we got to talking to this other couple who was sitting next to my late husband. Eventually they offered to switch us seats so we could sit together and we accepted.

It’s been a while. I parked in a supermarket parking lot next to a pickup of the same basic year and style as mine. I had seen the vehicle there before and assumed it belonged to someone who worked there. They were missing a small center hub cap on one wheel and I had an extra so I tossed the extra into the back.
