Has an addictive type of fondness for a particular food abruptly changed to something you simply didn't want any more?

Asked by Sunny2 (18842points) August 19th, 2012

Particular flavors of ice cream, for example. I’ll have a favorite for months, can’t get enough of it and suddenly don’t want it any more. It a bother when I’ve just stocked up with my favorite and really don’t want it particularly. The same thing happened with alcoholic drinks back when I was drinking. My SO and I would lose our taste for a particular cocktail at the same time, after drinking, say, a RobRoy, for a couple of years. We’d switch to say, a mai tai. That would last until, again, we tired of them and switched to something else for a long period of time.

I wouldn’t say addictive, which to me is a pretty strong word with a real meaning. But I used to be passionately fond of fried clams and ordered them often. This was back when I lived in the Boston area and they were readily available all over.

Then suddenly one day (with a plateful of them in front of me) I lost my appetite for them and thought they were disgusting. Nothing had actually changed except my taste. That was about 40 years ago, and I haven’t had any since.

@Jeruba You’re right, of course. Addictive is too strong a word, but you understood what I meant. Sorry about the clams, a personal favorite of mine from Boston. Now it’s fried calamari for me.

I don’t eat hotdogs anymore. They gross me out.

Like @Blackberry , I can no longer eat hot dogs. In my younger years, I devoured them, along with all modes of fast food: McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, etc. Now, simply the thought of eating that crap makes me physically ill.

That being said, I was on a pork chop kick for about 2 months after I got out of the hospital. That was all I wanted: pork chop and rice. I ate that literally everyday for 2 months, and I’ve never eaten one since.

I frequently find something that I “love”, overload on it and never eat it again.

I can get sick of anything if I have it often enough. Usually my taste for it comes back after a while of not eating it.

I go through periods when I can’t get enough of something, but when the craving is gone it is gone. Just a few examples are:

pimiento cheese
hummus
Little Debbie Nutty Bars
Oreos – the kind with a chocolate cookie on one side and vanilla on the other

@Supacase , wow, the whole Little Debbie Nutty Bars brought back some serious memories for me. Thanks! rummaging to see if I have any

Yes, I go through phases where I over-indulge on certain foods, making myself sick of them eventually. I never thought I’d be sick of dolly mixture, but I am.

Sunny2's avatar

@stardust What is “dolly mixture?”

I was just thinking, I’d hate to have that happen to cheese. It’s a dietary mainstay for me.

I try to listen to what my body is desiring, because there is some thought ‘out there’ that our bodies are actually craving the nutritional elements within the food we are craving. I know that lately, given hard aquatic workouts and kayaking that I get mad cravings for salty or conversely sweet foods, and I am searching all the pantries for the right things. Popcorn usually hits the target for salty, and I try to keep pseudo-expensive dark chocolate in the freezer when craving sweet.

I would say listen to and perhaps even journal your cravings for later examination.

Yes, I tend to crave certain drinks and foods at certain times. Sometimes I get in my birch beer kick, sometimes my sweet tea kick, and other times my orange juice kick. It’s the same with food too. Eventually I’ll crave something again that I got sick of, given enough time that is.

Dude, I still can’t stand ham sandwiches because I ate too many of them when I was 14.

Only last month I went through a period (couple of weeks) of buying myself a latte with Caramel syrup every morning. I’m not usually a coffee drinker but the staff in the cafe put enough caramel in it to get rid of the coffee taste. However, one day I felt quite poorly after drinking this latte and have not touched it since. I don’t think it was the latte that made me feel poorly, it was just a coincidence but even the smell of coffee makes my stomach churn now!!!

@Supacase Thanks! Now I’m craving pimiento cheese LOL.

The only thing I can think of is Indian food. I would describe those flavors as my favorite type of cuisine in the world, but because it is so good and so rich, that I can only eat it every now and then. More than once a month would be too much. But during those far between times when I do eat it, it’s like having a culinary “O”.
