How do you react to gory images (see details)?

Asked by Mariah (25883points) October 20th, 2012

Normally when I run across an image of a terrible injury online, I get this awful feeling in the pit of my stomach and have to click away. But just now I saw a bloody photo of a man with his spine exposed and it didn’t bother me at all. Here’s the difference: I had read prior to viewing that the “injury” was actually sophisticated makeup. It looked real, but knowing this information completely removed my reaction. Does this mean that my reaction to gore is really an empathetic feeling regarding the pictured person being in pain or something? Have you had the opportunity to test your reactions in a similar way, and what were the results? If you want, I can link to the makeup job image, but know that it’s pretty gross.

I prefer to not look at the really bad ones. It seems it is done intentionally to shock but I get that everyone has to do something to one up each other.

I find them intriguing.

I’m inclined to feel ill and look away from really bad gore I know of a photo essay about jihad in Thailand where people are getting cut in half by trains, but bodily injury does not bother me.

Images are no problem. They don’t stink. I prefer not to view them unless they serve a purpose, like training new Paramedics and First Responders.

I got enough gore up close and personal in my last career, I don’t need any more.

I can watch House of a 1000 Corpses but I can’t watch Faces of Death. If I know it’s real I get the heebie jeebies.

@jonsblond Don’t ever ask to look at my photo albums.

@WestRiverrat I will only ask for your cookbooks. that doesn’t sound right for this question, but you know what I mean. :)

I love horror movies and can look at fake stuff all day long (usually… every once in a while it’ll freak me out), but can’t handle the real deal. Knowing it is make-up, CGI, Photoshop or some other special effects thingie makes it okay, for some reason. Real gore just hits too close to home, I guess. It could happen to me or someone I love, maybe?

In the movies I just laugh, in real life a little bit of sick comes up.

Neither one seems to get to me. When I had Medical First Responder training we had real pictures of real people with real injuries projected on the walls constantly. Everything from people caught in farm equipment to suicides. Its pretty grisly, but it helps to de-sensatise you after a while.

They don’t bother me. My only problem is I can’t eat during or after.

When I was a kid, one of my favourite things to watch was a show called “Operation”. That’s exactly what it was.

The only one that ever gave me the heevie-skeevies was an open-eye surgery. I think they were removing a piece of glass or something.

These days? No problem. I’m cool as a cucumber about injuries even when it’s my own kid. Which is a good thing, because my husband works construction and is a huge klutz sometimes. I’ve had to do my share of wound care and no mistake.

Gory images don’t usually bother me. If I knew they were faked I don’t think they would bother me at all. I hate seeing needles being used and I can’t watch.

I used to look at images at Morbid.com I think that is the name. But now I certainly limit my exposure to anything I feel is not inspiring to me, or adds to my life in some way. I think it taints my soul.
