Do you collect anything?

Asked by BBawlight (2437points) March 22nd, 2013

I collect rubber ducks. No matter what size, color or design. I get them out of the claw machines at WalMart or in little packages as gifts from relatives (like my Christmas ducks).

I like & collect classic things, like marble bookstands, really old books, antique lace, silver, all kinds of different things that go in a Hope Chest for my niece to inherit someday.

I once collected antique tea spoons. It started in my 20s with a gift of one from my mother, who had always told me she thought that I had been born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Over the years I bought them at antique stores and received them as gifts, and I wound up with a rather large collection of beautiful ones from all over the world, some of them quite ornate. I still cherish them, but sadly, I stop acquiring them years ago.

I’ve started a collection of cigarette packs and lighters from various countries. I have 3 continents represented.
I also have a coin collection, both old U.S. coins and foreign coins, that I’ve had for ages, but I’m not very serious about it.
Finally, I suppose you could say I collect books… My whole living room is a library.

Birds. I didn’t intend to, but over the years I’ve complied a collection of glass, ceramic and wooden birds from many countries: a blue foot booby and a frigate bird from the Galapagos; a funny looking chicken from Poland; a pretty, round, blue glass bird from Sweden; a painted deep pink owl from Mexico; a wooden guinea hen from Zimbabwe; etc. They’re distributed around our apartment and only come together when I use them to decorate the dining table if we have guests for dinner.

I’m tempted to say “dust,” but I know that’s not what you meant.

I don’t have a hobby of collecting any particular things, but I tend to accumulate books in quantity, I have a modest but respectable assortment of Limoges porcelain and some inherited American Brilliant cut glass, and I have saved some samples of rock and sand from places I’ve visited.

I guess that I collect ribbons from athletic events (mostly marathons and triathlons) that I have participated in over the last 30 years. I have a large box of them. Also I collect autographs of great runners like Bill Rodgers, Frank Shorter, Billy Mills, Rod Dixon and Dick Beardsley. Also when running in world class marathons (Like Boston or N.Y. City), I keep a keen eye out for the discarded water bottles from elite runners. I seem to get courage and strength from just carrying them to the finish line. I had a hidden shrine made up of these water battles until my wife discovered it and through them away. Little does she know that I’ve started another elite runners water bottle collection in the garage. HA!

@bookish1 Dude. Let me know if you want some Canadian cigarette packs. Well, one or two, anyways. :D

I collect all horror movies I can get my hands on. I stick with the DVD format right now, although I do have some BluRays, but BluRay only comes out with popular shit, so trying to further my collection on this format for rare horror or b movies is completely useless, unless it happens to be some cult hit, and even then. Otherwise, I buy any and all horror movies whenever I get a few bucks to spare.

Also, Halloween decorations. I can’t say I really collect them, as it’s not a particular intent, but I just end up with a lot of them, most of which are used to decorate my apartment, no matter the time of year. I also love porcelain dolls, I have a small but cool collection of them. They’re all in the living room, staring at me funny whenever I walk in there.

Flatweave rugs. Turkey, Mexico, and the American Southwest. I don’t have any use for them. I have clean wood floors and very hairy animals. I just haul them out and look at them and roll them back up. I buy one about once every three years. I’ll sell em if you want some.

Empty wine bottles? I’ve been trying to start a cellar, but it just never works out.

I’ve stopped collecting most of the things I used to (Gund, Russ, Boyds and Disney collectibles and toys…etc.).

I still collect a few of the things I’ve always been passionate about (before I went all hoarder crazy). They include wooden African masks and carvings, old wooden items that need refinishing, fossils and books.

I do have an extensive Michael Jackson collection that I had been collecting since I was 15 years old – some of it is worth quite a bit now I’m told. Most of it is packed away in protective containers (other than a few of the more expensive “showcase” worthy items). Oh, I’ve also got a collection of patches – probably about 40 or so (those embroidered ones you put on clothing)...I want to sew them all onto a jean jacket.

Pokemon- it’s seriously an addiction. I just got into it again and I’m playing it for hours at a time everyday. It’s true what they say: Gotta catch ‘em all!
