Online radio that can play completely random music?

Asked by imsok00l (108points) April 3rd, 2013

Is there a customizable online radio such as Pandora or Spotify (which are not available where I live btw) that gives you the option of playing a completely random track blindly selected from its music collection? I’m looking for ways to discover new music, you see.

Not one that I know of. I may be wrong here, but I feel like it would take a lot of bandwidth to play completely random from its entire library rather than smaller libraries such as artist or genres. Can you get access to Last.fm or Grooveshark . Both are like Pandora or Spotify. If you’re looking for new music why not at least just pick a genre and let the station go random on that?

@uberbatman I don’t see how it would take any more bandwidth for them to play a random track than it takes to choose a track based on some criteria. All it would take is to randomly pick a track ID, no? I feel like I’m in a rut with the music I’m listening to and I want to discover new genres/bands without specifically looking for them. Grooveshark does work from my country and it’s a great service.

You might like Jango. The ads are a little annoying, but I haven’t yet been annoyed enough to become a member. Just pop in your favourite artist, and it selects bands with similar styles.

It might be worth looking around to find a radio station somewhere in your country that plays the music you like, and listen online… no need to be limited to local radio anymore. There will be some decent stations out there somewhere for whatever type of music you enjoy.

Here’s another site I’ve used in the past: 8tracks. It’s playlists uploaded by users; you choose the category, and they give you a selection of playlists to choose from. The limitation to this one is that if you don’t like the song currently playing, you can only “fast forward” a certain number of times. I don’t know why they do that, but I guess if you are skipping a few songs, you’re kind of admitting that playlist isn’t for you, anyway. I generally find that because they’re uploaded by users, they have more of a personal, “mixed tape” feel, which I like.

Pandora is nice if you like new music, or popular music.

If you like “weirder” genres, you’re pretty screwed.

What do Opeth, Deep Purple, Danzig, Iron Maiden, Goatwhore, and Suicidal Tendencies all have in common? Each one of those Pandora “stations” plays nothing but Black Sabbath and Anthrax.

I mean, I like Black Sabbath and Anthrax. I just don’t want to hear them every other song. Annoying.

I think ‘TuneInRadio’ can do something along those lines. Not quite sure, worth checking out though! It has an app and a website.

@Seek_Kolinahr while I personally like Last.fm more than pandora I’ve definitely discovered a lot of “weirder” music on pandora the most recent being desert dwellers
