If the shit really hits the fan, which would you rather have. Gold, or bullets?

Asked by josie (30934points) August 1st, 2013

Like most people, I invest money for the future, anticipating a time when it will be harder for me to actually work to earn it. I usually buy selected mutual funds and some utility and emerging market stocks.

I have never bought gold. I have a couple of (pretty wealthy) friends who buy gold. Most of them sort of speculate in their gold investments-it goes up, it goes down, they buy low, sell high, etc.
Or they have a little bit as a “hedge” against inflation.

Whatever.

But I know a few people who buy gold, because (I think) they imagine that when the “economy collapses” they will use their gold like they use currency today. To buy food and gasoline etc.

Truth is, I figure if the “economy collapses” or if the shit otherwise hits the fan, I would rather have a bunch of 9mm and 5.56×45mm ammo than gold coins.

So, I buy some of that instead of gold.

Am I wrong?

I assume in that “Shit hits the fan” scenario that I am going to be facing armed gangs and not individuals so the guns thing doesn’t strike me as a viable strategy.

Gold, however, would not be the way to go. I think people who sell gold advocate this.

Diamonds. You can hide them much easier, more portable, and people lust after those even more than gold for bartering purposes.

I’ve heard another popular bartering item would be hard alcohol. Everyone will want to drink their sorrows away if the shit hits the fan, and it has a long shelf life. I’m not a hard alcohol drinker, but I think this would be my first choice.

I think you are missing the obvious solution here which is the silver bullet.

Silver is floating around $20 a troy ounce. And it’s much heavier than a $20 bill. And you can’t eat it.

I think the people hoarding gold are going to be really disappointed when they find out the real apocalypse currency will be ammunition, propane, and tinned food.

Is the shit just hitting the fan in America? Are you going to flee? Shit hit the fan to me means tha Nazis are coming after me. Gold is very heavy to travel with, diamonds might be more practical.

Economic collapse, and you are going to see it through the horrible depression, and hope for a recovery. Well, are the guns for bartering? Or, for protection as people start to lose it from poverty? Probably the best is to have skills to survive. Fishing, farming, preserving, carpentry, sewing, cooking, etc. Also, have strong community ties where people can rely on each other and utilize each other’s skills and not feel competitive, but rather cooperative.

In such a dyer situation as you describe I think that we are all SOL no matter what weapons or gold that you have. I’ve been buying gold as a hedge against high or hyper inflation if that ever occures. This is because if that happens, it will likely take a whole bath tub full of cheap paper dollars to buy one ounce of gold.

But if the shit really hits the fan, then we are all screwed. In that case a 9mm bullet to ones own head would be very helpful.

Between the two, definitely ammunition.

But the most important thing for me to have when the SHTF…
...a great relationship with my neighbors.

Between us, we have generators, handy men, lots of big gardens, all sorts of tools and gizmos, radios, trucks, vans, bicycles, air compressors, countless dogs and a good number of law enforcement officers…

As to weaponry… well…

Mad Max got it right & the Clampetts, black gold is where it’s at.
Who’s going to give a shit about ‘shiny stuff” when the dark times comes a calling?
It’d be like selling camel shit to the arabs.

Alcohol, food, skills that make you indispensable in some way, and sex. I think those are the things that will be the best bartering tools.

Bullets, gold only buys what’s not already on you. I read shoes will be needed for walking.

If liquor is where it’s at then I’m golden. I’m smack in the middle of moonshine country.

Ha! Ya’lls is gunna be wishin yous one uh us rednecks when all that shit starts aflyin. Booze n bullets all over this here place. (And more brains than you probably think.)

I’m very creative and handy, so that to me would be worth more than either gold or bullets in such a predicament. No currency by itself would be valuable in such a scenerio. Only services and usable goods would be.
