Are cowboys cool? Do you like cowboys?

Asked by Berserker (33548points) August 5th, 2013

I mean dudes with hats and horses who eat steak, get drunk and have showdowns at noon. Not sports. Cuz fuck sports. although probably most cowboys would have enjoyed football
But seriously folks, do you like cowboys? Like cowboy movies and the like? I’m not familiar much with cowboy entertainment, but I do think they’re pretty cool, from what I’ve seen. Saw a couple movies. The Quick and the Dead is probably my favorite, but my dad had his favorite, The Good the Bad and the Ugly which I thought was awesome. At least in movies and all, cowboys are cool, not sure what they were like in real life.
I like the idea of a shameless cowboy with no honor who stands in a bell tower on top of a church, wearing a creepy trenchcoat and an over sized hat, pegging people off with a rifle.
Also, Lucky Luke kicks ass. Loved these comics as a kid, and I still do now.
Just a random question yall, cowboys, are they cool? Like them? Got somethin’ to say, pardner? ’‘spits’’ Say it.

I live in cowboy country. I don’t like them anymore nor any less than any other person.

jonsblond's avatar

Sure, why not? Some of them are cute, and I like the outdoorsy, rugged type. My husband was a farmhand for many years and a farmhand isn’t that different than a cowboy. In fact, I believe he was considered 10% cowboy in his job description when a management company took over the ranch he worked at.

Berserker's avatar

Dude, cowboy is a job description? K, that is so cool. :D

jonsblond's avatar

I wish I could remember the actual percentage used. It was something like 60% laborer, 10–20% cowboy and I can’t remember the rest. I heard cowboy and thought “how cool is it to be married to a cowboy”. :D

Berserker's avatar

I really wonder what the cowboy part means. That’s really interesting.

jonsblond's avatar

Herding animals on horseback. Working with cattle is a dangerous job.

Judi's avatar

I’m from Bakersfield where pert near ever one thinks they’re a cowboy. Really they’re a bunch of redneck jerks.

Berserker's avatar

@jonsblond Ah, yeah, if he was doing that, then I understand. Wasn’t aware that people did this for a living anymore, though. ;/ You’re teaching me some. :)

ragingloli's avatar

Cowboys are so gay.

Berserker's avatar

Aaaaah shaddap and bring your guns out the closet, yeah? :D

ucme's avatar

In movies yes, but real life cowboys just come across as brain dead momma’s boys.
Loved most of Clint Eastwood’s westerns, Pale Rider/High Plains Drifter/ Unforgiven/Josey Wales/Good,Bad,Ugly, as well as films like Tombstone & yes, Quick & the Dead.
When I was a kid my mum bought me this cool cowboy outfit, I ditched the crap waistcoat but wore the hat & especially the hip slung holsters & guns.
She said I walked liked I shit myself, but I was just trying to look authentic gunslinger.

Need a picture @ucme.

ucme's avatar

@Judi One does exist somewhere of a xmas morning where me & my two brothers are standing pointing our toy rifles at the camera, we’re all wearing cowboy hats & huge gormless grins :)

They didn’t come any cooler than Shane. Come back, Shane.

@Symbeline Cowboys are cool and all, but don’t you wonder how bad they smelled? I don’t like going one day without a shower. After a long stint working wouldn’t it be like, I’m going over to sit with the cows so I can’t smell you guys.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

They are cool but give me a zombie any day!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@ZEPHYRA How about zombie cowboys?

filmfann's avatar

<—- imagines a zombie cowboy singing “Home on the Braaaaiiiinnnnsss”

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I can see this going way off the tracks in a bit, but knowing @Symbeline she probably wouldn’t mind. I can see several movie ideas. The Slow and the Undead, etc.

ucme's avatar

They combined cowboys & zombies in Red Dead Redemption, a DLC that saw the undead rise from their graves & lock horns with the rootin, tootin cowboy folk…sorta fits, great fun anyway.
Also, look

I like cowboy movies, like looking at a well built cowboy in tight Wranglers and a hat and love being around horses.
Unfortunately, once a cowboy (or cowgirl, really) start talking and all… Many of them might as well have a ratty, greasy baseball cap, a dirty t-shirt and chaw.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Yeeeeeeeeees zombie cowboys!

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Not necessarily the getting drunk and having high noon shootouts part, but the clothes? Hot damn. Take a regular guy, stuff him into a pair of Wranglers, and boots and a wide-brim cowboy hat, and… <fans self> Even overweight, unattractive men somehow look good in cowboy clothes.

And don’t even get me started on hot men in chaps with a gun belt

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Mel Brooks could do a remake of Blazing Saddles but I’m not sure how they would do the campfire scene without beans.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

I like cowboys better than cowpokes.

Berserker's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe There is a movie about zombie cowboys I saw called Undead or Alive. It was pretty cool lol.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Symbeline Cool. That’s a great concept for a zombie movie! But what do they do with rustlers and horse thieves? What happens if you hang a zombie?

KNOWITALL's avatar

Cowboys are pretty cool. I like that they are self-sufficient, the good guys don’t need anyone telling them what’s ‘right’, they already know. They usually like animals, nature and the open trail/ sky. They always get the girl.

But they spit and stink and often look scruffy.

Supposedly a LOT of movies are in production currently to modernize the American cowboy, it’s pretty cool. Hopefully like Dances With Wolves. :) tutankawahe

Berserker's avatar

@Smelly Cowboys Yeah I guess they probably did reek. But my guess is, back then, probably just about everybody reeked lol.

@KNOWITALL I tried watching that movie three times, and all three times, something happened that made it so I couldn’t finish it. Kinda weird. Lol.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Symbeline Not the ho’s, they had perfume, lemon verbena…lol

You should try again, I loved it, so did hubs, good rainy day movie. I still want to see Cowboys versus Aliens.

Berserker's avatar

@KNOWITALL I saw Cowboys VS Aliens. It’s a pretty epic movie lol. And yeah, DwW is still a plan.

When I was a kid growing up in Fort Worth, one of my cowboy heroes was Randolph Scott. I got the chance to see him in person when my folks took me to a musical. He was in the audience and when introduced from the stage, he stood up to take a bow. What a thrill that was for me.

This is from Wikipedia:

As a leading man for all but the first three years of his cinematic career, Scott appeared in a variety of genres, including social dramas, crime dramas, comedies, musicals (albeit in non-singing and non-dancing roles), adventure tales, war films, and even a few horror and fantasy films. However, his most enduring image is that of the tall-in-the-saddle Western hero. Out of his more than 100 film appearances more than 60 were in Westerns; thus, of all the major stars whose name was associated with the Western, Scott most closely identified with it.

My great-grandfather was one of the last real cowboys. In that I mean he grew up handling horses and cattle and went on cattle drives. He also managed a ranch for a while. He had his ear bitten off in a fight. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he’d been in gunfights. I never thought to ask, though. Oh, and he had a brief appearance on the TV show Dallas.

Other members of my family have been bull riders, bronc riders, ropers, etc. I suppose I have a soft spot for them.

FutureMemory's avatar

I’ve seen almost zero ‘real’ cowboy movies, but Urban Cowboy with John Travolta is one of my all time favorites. Something about how simple their lives were is very attractive to me. I like simple people, hah.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I’m definitely a fan of the cowboy legend. Whether real cowboys are all they are bigged up to be, I couldn’t say!
