How do you pronounce this?

Asked by ccrow (8097points) August 26th, 2013

The word ‘toward’ (or ‘towards’)... I was watching a weather report and the weather girl was saying it ‘too-WARDS’. I have always said ‘tord’- I’m from New England. Is this a regional thing?

It’s “tords”. I’ve never said it or heard it any other way.

“Twohrds.” I am from Colorado.

The correct pronunciation is “tord”, NO “s”.

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room You’re right. Thank you for the grammar check. lol
It’s too late to edit, now I look like a moron. Ah well. This isn’t the first time and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

Two-words. As in, two words. @Pachyderm_In_The_Room I see you, I’m not ignoring the… eh, you’ve probably heard all variations of that joke before.

@Katniss, one never looks like a moron admitting a mistake, and I guarantee, the earth will continue to spin. Cheers! ;-)

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room Well thank God for that! lol

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room Grammatically speaking, either is correct. I certainly hear the “s” pronounced as well as written, sometimes.

Pachy's avatar

True, @wildpotato, it’s pronounced both ways and probably more often than not with an “s”. But as a writer and one who has done a lot of commercial narration, I made the decision long ago to stick with the pronunciation I was taught by people I respected—no “s”. As it was explained to me, it simply isn’t necessary.

And now, onward toward other questions…

I definitely don’t say “tord”; for me, it’s more like “tword”; there’s definitely a W sound in there.

As for “toward” vs. “towards”, the “s” is a remnant of the Old English genitive case suffix and is the same “s” in “sometimes”, “backwards”, and “always”. Neither one is more correct than the other. It means nothing now, grammatically speaking, but “toward” and “towards” are completely interchangeable.

Always pronounced it tow-ard. That is the way I’ve always heard it said. Not twoard, or tord, or too wards. The last one would make it sound like two words.

ccrow's avatar

I guess I actually almost have two syllables.. like tow-rd. Now I’ve said it to myself enough that it sounds like nonsense.

too-WARDS here. “Tords” sounds really strange to me.

augustlan's avatar

Mine is like @DominicX. Tword.

whitenoise's avatar

I would say too-ward

Webster has a different opinion: they say toe-ard

I pronounce it “ham-ster”, because I’m a rebel, and I don’t have to follow any of your pronunciation rules.

Pachy's avatar

Oxford gives four correct pronunciations, which you can hear here.

I’m still sticking with “tord”.

I must be more Bri’ish in my pronunciation than I realized.

That’s what you get being taught Her Majesty’s ways…
