What is the stupidest thing you've seen on a social media site?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37350points) September 16th, 2013

A friend of mine posted his home address on Facebook once. Sheer stupidity! It made me want to slap my forehead and shout, “D’oh!”

Have you seen really ignorant things on a social media site like Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Tumblr, or another?

So many to choose from. But most have involved politics and race, primarily from my family (since I wouldn’t be friends with anyone like that). Occasionally I block or unfriend, usually I just hide their posts.

Clearly faked stories concerning Muslim women, usually about their state of dress & how it offends the oh so sensitive, racist fuckers who are only to willing to be stirred up by that shite.

I don’t understand why that is shocking.

Don’t they publish home addresses in the phone book, that they deliver to every home in a 20 mile radius of your place?

Anyway, the stupidest I’ve seen has to be the facebook group for planning my high school 10 year reunion.

I’ve never seen such an illiterate bunch of near-30 year olds in my life.

Oh, and they’ve been “planning” this for two years, the anniversary year is nearly over, and they’ve gotten as far as “Let’s rent the party room at Hooters. I’ll bring my pet snake. We should dress how we dressed in high school!”

Just… kill me.

People can just be mean and lie without any recourse. I saw a graphic that read, “If you’re a Christian and someone rapes you you have to marry them, it’s in the Bible.” Of course that’s not true but it floored me how people can blatantly lie about things like that and offend people without even a hint of care whether or not it’s true. I don’t understand how people can be so hateful!

I’ve heard preachers say that if you’re raped you’re still a virgin in the eyes of God because you didn’t share the moment in the way that God intended. Which is the school of thought of all the Christians that I know. I think there’s an “open season” on Christians and it’s filled with bad information and outright lies and it’s just stupid.

Wouldn’t that be Shiite?

I am amazed people post vacation plans. “We are going away for 2 weeks on a cruise to Alaska!” Which means, of course, they are saying “Our house is unoccupied for the next 2 weeks! Come steal all my stuff!”

But the stupidest thing I’ve seen on social media has to be Farmville.

I’m not sure about the stupidest thing but the most annoying has to be when people post every. Single. Thing. That they’re doing at that moment. “Walking the dog” or “Eating dinner” or “Taking a shit” doesn’t need to be known! Nobody cares.

@ItalianPrincess1217 I just finished breakfast and now I’m watching the kittens wrestle. In a minute or 2 I’m going to put on some shoes and go to work!

ucme's avatar

@Espiritus_Corvus Ha, yes I believe it would.

@DWW25921 That’s exactly what my newsfeed consists of!

I see people putting their birth date with years. I see all kinds of personal information revealed. It really makes me sad.

The list updates every 7.4 minutes. So much stupid that I can’t pick just a hundred, let alone one.

@DWW25921 The price they pay for declaring open season on everybody else for centuries…

@ItalianPrincess1217 Came home early because business is slow, cooked some sausages and decided to check a few internet accounts.

@ItalianPrincess1217 I like knowing when people are taking a shit.

DWW25921's avatar

@jerv And that makes it right! Oh, ok. Every group on the planet that’s been around for thousands of years has had it’s up and down moments. Get over it. It seems tolerance only applies to groups on your master list than? How I love your logic!

@Seek_Kolinahr The person who listed his and his partner’s compete home address lives in a major metropolitan area with millions of people. They do not have a landline phone and thus are not listed in any phone book. There are some very sick characters on the Internet, and any one of them could get hold of the address and show up at their doorstep and cause serious trouble. The person, by the way, has a large following on FB.

Just pulled this randomly from my news feed:

Greese is on amc as i havnt changed my channel since breaking bad..not even pulp fiction can bring back dudes man card ..remote please

I find shit like the above hilarious. This is why I leave and love the stupid on my social media accounts. Thoughtful and intelligent is welcome and heartily appreciated, but, well just check out the post that my wife saved for me:

dumb idea not going to save lives you hear them geting shot in the head or hell in the chest not in the back how dumb give them swat gear i guess ur all on crack come on it’s all on how you raise your kids they need to be spanked or take there toys or phones so on away from them such a croc there is no way of stoping that just like bullying golden spoon feed brats

Thoughtful and intelligent can’t make me laugh like that post does. Especially when I’m drunk and reading it aloud in a manner befitting the Bard himself.

bonus points if you can tell what topic the 2nd quote is referring to

I want the bonus points, but trying to translate that nonsense is making me cross-eyed.
