Can I drive a plant from Wisconsin to New York?

Asked by aoldfield (7points) June 26th, 2008

I need to move my ficus tree to New York, but the moving company wont transport a plant across state lines. Can I drive it myself or ship it?

Yes you can.

The reason your moving company doesn’t like transporting it has to do with possible health threats in different states. Or they try to limit the number of bugs that may infect their crops. All movers have to be able to show a manifest, if there’s just furniture to declare they wouldn’t have to unload their truck.

The chance that you might run into something like that is very unlikely.

I brought a bamboo tree from Florida to Wisconsin on a plane, so I don’t see why not. It stuck out of my backpack the entire time and no one said anything.

There is no reason you cannot move the plant as long as it is within the continental US. Taking the plant out of the country or to Hawaii would involve the Federal Dept of Ag. inspecting the plant and giving their approval to have it shipped.
