Sochi Olympics. On a scale of 1 to 10, in your opinion, how likely do you feel that terrorists will strike during the Olympics?

Asked by Cruiser (40454points) February 6th, 2014

1 being least likely and 10 being a guarantee that terrorists will pull something off. Today I read this article that has airlines flying to Russia on alert for toothpaste tubes that could be used to make bombs on board the plane. My gut feeling is we only get to read about a fraction of the activity that goes on concerning terrorist probes and so far there has been a lot of reports of probes and threats.

So how do you rate the chance of something happening during the Olympics? Do you want to take a guess what the terrorists might do?

and I hope I am not proven wrong

Most of their recent attacks have been suicide bombings correct? So, probably that.

I don’t do scales, leave that to fishes & cooks.
The threat is pretty severe, but the likelihood of any attack coming to fruition is fairly minimal given the level of security on show.
I’d love it if some prankster let off a firecracker near Putin as he was speaking at the opening ceremony. Marvel at his tough exterior melting away as he cowers for cover in front of a global TV audience…one can only but dream.

5 out of 10. I think it’s about even that something will happen. But no one seems to even be aware that the games started today, so once the terrorists see the TV ratings have gone south, they’ll wait until World Cup starts in June.

They would like to, but the Russians will make it difficult.

10. They’ll hit something, inside or outside of the security zone. This is too big of a podium for them to do nothing. A suicide bomber doesn’t really care, so someone will get hurt somewhere.

I wouldn’t go if you paid me and gave me a free, high end hotel room . Very dangerous situation.

@Aster There is a lot in the news today on the lack of visitors and attendees to Sochi. Hate to think it was all related to terrorist threats.

@Cruiser I don’t “hate to think it’s because of terrorist threats” because I believe we have to accept facts. I think half the reason for the low turnout is fear and the other half has to do with dark yellow water coming from the faucets. You can’t drink it or shower in it . Who the heck made the brilliant decision of having the Olympics in Russia? A sadist?

Yawn…000.1
The only people that may strike that are considered as terrorist by the Russian government are the gay rights activist and a very slim chance of Greenpeace activists…

@Aster He very well could be a sadist…Russian businessman, Gafur Rakhimov an alleged heroin Kingpin who helped convince the International Olympic Committee to chose Russia to host the winter Olympics.

Are you serious?? That is amazing!!

I pray nothing tragic occurs but would not be surprised. I can’t pick a number on the odds but I would say it is more probable than possible, sadly. I hope something horrible does not happen.

I hope the terrorists are dogs.

It’s probably more related to Putinistan’s recent record on human rights.

@Darth_Algar It also appears the quality and condition of accommodations and the fact you have to bring your own pillow may be a factor as well.

And the fact that, by all estimations, Sochi is set to have some pretty serious power outages during games.

Cruiser's avatar

@Darth_Algar And with the rate of injuries to the athletes, there may not be anyone left to stand on the podiums!

In Soviet Russia podium stands on you!

(Yeah, I got nothing.)
