Take web screenshots for a website?

Asked by fonziguy (20points) July 5th, 2008

Is there a way to take automatic screenshots of websites for php and/or ruby on rails apps? Or is there a good service out there that you could recommend? (thinking for the likes of a CSS gallery website)

What exactly are you trying to do? Implement it into a web app of yours? Or take screenshots of the web through an online interface?

For Transferr we use IECapt on Windows and khtml2png in Ubuntu (KDE) but the Windows one is far easier to use, the Ubuntu one is just a backup…

We use them to gather screenshots of pages automatically (using PHP) and then they are added to a database for display on our bookmark-icons ( screenshot ). Both work kinda like the way a Web-Clip bookmark is added on iPhone/iPod Touch, so that the sites have a little thumbnail of the site there. Hope this helps… I’m not sure if this is what you mean in the question or not!

Perhaps you can pass a URL call to http://browsershots.org and grab the resulting PNG file?

I think @fonziguy is asking about something that would make screenshots of websites you linked to automatically, like on BestWebGallery and such.

The only one I found so far is MyWebshots. BestWebGallery used to have a link to the service they use, but I can’t seem to find it anymore.

Found another one, but it’s in French. Just run it through Google Translate. It requires a back-link to their site though.

Yes I’m looking for something that automatically takes screenshots, as inko9nito says, like http://bestwebgallery.com. So when a user submits a site, I can get an automatic screenshot rather than having to take one myself.

Found this one a few days ago. It’s free and doesn’t require a backlink! http://www.siteshotz.com

I recently found Jing (http://www.jingproject.com/). It might get done what you are looking for and it works awesome!!

@dangdang jing is for taking screenshots and videos of your desktop activity. That’s not what he’s after. But jing is in fact awesome. Use it all the time :)

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, although I haven’t found something that is full proof. Maybe the way to go is just take the screen shots myself, although it would be good if there was a handy tool out there.

I’m using a Mac so does anyone know a good screen capture tool for Mac? e.g. one that allows you to take a screenshot and resizes it automatically?
