HFS (mac) volume help...

Asked by zarnold (708points) July 5th, 2008

OK so my HFS formatted external usb 2.0 hdd won’t mount, even after a successful repair/permissions verfication. Now even those options are blanked out in the “first aid” pane of the disk utility. The volume is recognized as the right size and filesystem, but it simply won’t mount. Any advice / experience with this problem? Thanks!

are you on an intel or powerpc machine?

I’m on an intel machine. I can mount other devices (like my 2nd external hfs hdd), and was able to fine a temporary fix for the problem in the apple support pages by running the following in terminal:

/System/Library/Filesystems/hfs.fs/hfs.util -N /dev/disk0s2

where you replace disk0s2 with whatever number your disk is asigned. Unfortunately, I got an error message stating that I would only have limited-functionality access to the disk, but enough to back up all of the data. I’m wondering if there’s any way I can fix the filesystem journal without a complete reformat, which I feel like I do a bit too often.
