Diet or Exercise? The age old question.

I’ve read lots of articles and focused on both myself. I know that a combination of both is the best thing for a healthy lifestyle. However, I just can’t accept that they equally affect being healthy. I want to know what has personally helped you to be healthier: Improving Diet or doing more exercise? What truly makes a bigger difference on looks and health? Thanks for the input. There are so many articles that claim this or that, but I want to know from personal experience what seems to have a bigger impact!

Exercise. You can eat all the healthy food you want, but if you eat too much of it and sit on your butt all day it won’t really matter will it. It’s just my opinion but I would rather eat terrible and exercise than eat great and never exercise.

Definitely agree with @Blackberry. Exercise is the better choice. Use it or lose it.

You should move your body every day.

But, in terms of sustainable weight loss and lifestyle, I’d go with diet. Otherwise, with any drop/change in physical activity you are at risk of your weight ballooning.

Personally, by modifying my diet, I have discontinued medications (antidepressants, anti-inflammatory, pain, digestive) and identified food intolerances. I feel much better from head to toe, quite literally, due to diet alone.

Both really are essential. But, in my opinion, healthy and clean eating trumps exercise.

Combine both:
Eat plenty of curry & drink lots of beer, it gives you the runs, like, shit hot.

Replace “or” with “and” If you must pick then pick eating. You will not get very far with exercise without the fuel to do it.

If your focus is your weight, by far food counts the most, unless you actually exercise 6–8 hours a day like a dancer would.

For health I think they are almost equally important.

Both. If you eat well but lite and move more the weight will fall off in no time.

90% diet, 10% exercise.

From ARTICLES I read it’s 30% exercise and 70% diet;
However I don’t work out. Never. And I thought that’s why when I was not that healthy. But then I started healthy diet and now I’m as good as other students who often do sports in physical.
Many western countries emphasis the importance of working out a lot but there’s a limit, I think. Professional athletes often live less time than average because breaking physical limit of your body actually includes the damage part and for normal people, we really don’t need that good body in our daily life. Whether you can lift 100 kg or run 10 km doesn’t matter. Good shape is another thing, but Chinese medicals focus on “keep” in good health, including healthy diet and lifestyle, instead of improving or training.
We focus on balance, not breaking through limits.

I figure it would be a mix of both. It’s good to know some percentages though. It seems like the scale tips towards diet in being a little more helpful in establishing health. I would say that makes sense even though both are important. I guess another part of this question is if only one was available which would be best?

I think it should be both. The people I know who are 90 plus of age including my grandfather all have one thing in common. They have active lifestyle and they eat healthy usually mainly fruits, vegetables and fish. Not so much with meat.

But, if we want to lose weight it’s not really about eating healthy. It’s primarily about calories. The fitness guru usually advise us to eat healthy because healthy food usually contains fewer calories. There are a lot of fad diet right now but at the end of the end it’s still just really all about calories. Whatever the source of our calories be it from carbs, protein or fat it does not matter. What matter is the total calorie intake for the day. If we want to lose weight FAST, diet and cardio exercises are the best way to go.

Now if we want longevity, to this I mean not starving ourselves but can still maintain vavavoom figure, we must do weight training to be able to build muscles because muscle mass are like burning machine. They burn calories even if we are at rest or not doing anything. But of course it’s not really easy to build muscles. It takes so much time and effort and we have to have enough protein in our diet to build muscles mass.

Both, but cutting calories comes first. Eat lighter, move more.
