Why won't my computer let me uninstall this unwanted, unasked for program?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46813points) August 1st, 2017

My computer has been freezing up for a few seconds, several times a day, for a few months now. It says, “Firefox is not responding.” I’ve done everything I know how to do.
I finally decided to go look at my program list. I’m kind of paranoid because I really f’d up my computer once, when I inadvertently crashed my entire operating system this way…but I got it back.
I saw this one, called “Counter Strike Source.” The publisher is “Valve.”
It installed in April.
When I try to uninstall it it does this. It’s trying to force me to make an account or something and no indication of a further uninstall option.
How do I uninstall the thing?

(I just realized I haven’t tried to uninstall Firefox, then reinstall it yet. I’ll try that too after this discussion.)

It’s a game. Valve is a video game publisher and Steam is their digital distribution platform. To uninstall it you’d need to log in to Steam, which, I’m guessing, you don’t know the log-in info for it. Talk to one of the grandkids?

For what it’s worth, however, Counter Strike or Steam are unlikely to be causing your issue with Firefox.

Thanks @Darth_Algar. Pretty sure it’s not one of the kids. If it was they probably wouldn’t remember.

I set the script run time to 20 per the instructions. Thanks @Tropical_Willie.

for good measure I’d install Malwarebytes and run it.

Click on the “retrieve a lost account” ang type the usenname they wrote in the first field. It should gove you the password you need to unlock the program. Then you can find the way to uninstall it.

I’ll check that out @Sneki2.

I’ve run other scans @Rarebear. Wasn’t sure if I still have Malware, but I do, so I’m running it now.

Thanks guys.

@Rarebear Good idea! At the Mac store once when I had problems and they fixed it they installed Malware. A free application. If I’m having problems I do a Malware scan. They will identify known malware and isolate it so you can delete it.

I ran it. Quarantined 58 suspected problems. Why are they always those things that start as “PUP”?

@Dutchess_III Who uses the computer beside you??

Sounds like someone is visiting a lot of “Malware ponds” on the inter-web.

Who is downloading things on to the computer?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

PUP and what to do about them.

Honestly, no one. The kids do, sort of, but I get them plugged in to what ever. The five year old likes Shimmer and Shine.
Sometimes I watch cat videos with the 3 year old. But not often. They need to be anyplace but “plugged in” at my house.
Rick has two computers of his own.

What is ” Filehippo.com,” @Tropical_Willie ? I see it’s one of the “most widely used down load portals,” but am I using it and not knowing it?

Dutchess_III's avatar

That is a lot of information @Tropical_Willie. Can you condense it for me?

@Dutchess_III TLDR version: PUP means “protentially unwanted program”. The three most common ways for PUPs to enter your computer are 1. You click on fake links, 2. Some softwares try to stuff PUPs in your computer when you do installation, and 3. Someone else use your computer and unknowningly install PUPs. You should scan your computer to find adwares and use common sense to avoid bogus links and solfwares.

Thanks @Mimishu1995. I am as careful as I can be and no one else uses the computer with rare exceptions.
Thanks for the definition. Running the Malware seems to have helped.

@Dutchess_III Some of the malware I had was Genio and Genieo, Never heard of the PUP.
The app I have is Malwarebytes by Anti-Malware. When I was having all the problems I couldn’t delete stuff. It actually changed my home page and my search engine!
