Is there software to remove the folders of programs I've uninstalled?

Asked by aprilsimnel (30749points) May 25th, 2010

Today, I’ve “cleaned house”: on my C:/ drive and uninstalled a passel of programs that I no longer use. However, I didn’t look to see where the folders of these programs were kept in my Program Files section, and now I’m not sure how to start getting rid of the detritus. I have a registry cleaner, and I used it already, so that’s not an issue.

Is there software that can determine which folders/files are for uninstalled programs and delete those folders (and any other unneeded bits) from my computer?

There is a program called Revo Uninstaller with a free version and a paid version. The free version is quite adequate. If you use Revo to unsinstall your programs it scans for leftover unused folders and registry entries, and removes them automatically, with your approval. It also backs up the registry in case something goes wrong.

If you performed uninstall correctly the folders should be gone.

@dpworkin good to know about. thanx

I’m not sure if I read your question correctly, but I have something called AppZapper. All I do is open AppZapper, drag the stuff into it, and it deletes the dragged file, as well as all files that were placed on my computer when I installed it.

@mrrich724, I have a PC, but thanks! Good to know for when I do get a Mac.

@anartist, in the Program Files folder, there will be leftover stuff. A lot of programs can’t imagine you’d get rid of their precious software, and there’s a lot of junk left behind. Many uninstallers just delete the program and that’s it.

@dpworkin, I will try the free version and see what happens. Thank you!

Revo Uninstaller is excellent. I’ve been using for years.

If you want to really go hardcore, you can install a program that takes snapshots of your system, like Rollback RX (not free, unfortunately). Whenever I’m installing a particularly intrusive program that I only need for one use, I take a snapshot with Rollback RX, install the program, do my work, then revert to that snapshot. It’ll be as if you never installed the program in the first place.

Revo Pro does monitored installations.

The Revo worked like a champ. Thanks, all.
