Did your parents support you, believe in you?

Asked by dopeguru (1928points) November 5th, 2017

I wonder what the role of parenting has in one’s ambition and achievements. Is it better if your parents didn’t believe in you, or worse, for instance? I know that one famous guitarist’s dad hated his songs and constantly yelled at him.

No. They disowned me when I was 17. No loss. I disowned them at the same time!

To the extent that their narcissism would allow them too, they did. It was helpful but I still had a lot to overcome.

My parents have been very supportive and respectful of me. (And by supportive, I don’t mean overindulgent.) They were great. I very much appreciated that, especially when I have seen so many other parents’ behavior that was not so good, or even terrible. I have seen many people suffer from parental failings and shamings and shortcomings and projections and abuses. On the other hand, sometimes crappy parenting does lead to reactions which can have positive effects on the children… but I would never prefer to have had that to having supportive parents.
